What does almost every single one of those videos have in common? The sanctioning bodies don't require any racing training to go racing.

I've never done a track day. I've wanted to, but it's videos like those that scare me off. Every time. Just can't afford to break my car.

A trackday is usually 100% nice streetcars and no one is looking to go side by side in the turns. The trackday organization typically limits passing to certain straightaways and will always require an instructor to ride with drivers in the novice/beginner class. There's really nothing to worry about if you don't overdrive yourself and you pay attention to what's going on around you. On top of that, trackday organizations don't utilize timing equipment, thus making them a drivers education, non-timed event. Most insurance companies will cover incidents that occur during trackday events. |

As Drew said, this is racing VS track days. People are grouped together by skill level so you have a pretty good idea of what to expect. One of the great things about trackdays is like minded people all (hopefully) going the same direction.

So much fail in these videos.
Politics of Wrecking demonstrates why, on the first day of any HDPE/PDX/Racing instruction, you will hear "In a spin, two feet in". I disagree with the opinion that one should come to a halt to watch a wreck. The spinning car had more than one chance to lock everything down and allow inertia to run its course. Unpredictable behavior is dangerous. |

We depend on the flaggers to be looking ahead. There are many spots on a track where, if not warned, it would be a disaster. If I come over a rise at 125 and the previous flag stand had not displayed a warning, things will go south in a hurry. |

I've always said I am safer on the track than going there or coming back.

I will offer up my own screw up here.
Fortunately, most of the dumb stuff I have done was not caught on film, but this shows the proper way to handle an off when you overshoot a turn and go in too hot. I was taught to never pinch the car, try to make it do things is doesn't want to do with severe steering angle. I was taught to put two off and keep two on as opposed to sliding across grass into a barrier. I was going in too hot, taking a really weird wide arc, and paid for it. The guy behind me slowed down and waited for me to get the car settled as opposed to attempting a pass. This could have ended much worse. It towards the end at 1.55 |
