Default Golfers.....

To start off.....I don't play, never did and probably never will but.....my neighbor came out all crazy how her son just called her because he made a hole in one....now I assume that the goal of the first shot is to get as close as you can....I mean no one can aim for the actual hole (golf,we're talking golf here !)
I think he was just lucky......So what says the golfers here.

Actuaries at such companies have calculated the chance of an average golfer making a hole in one at approximately 12,500 to 1, and the odds of a tour professional at 2,500 to 1.
It's a event that few get to enjoy.

I have one, it was pretty damn cool. My father has been playing for about 60 years and has six total, which is pretty amazing and something not common at all among amateur golfers. My brother is a lot better than me and doesn't have any. Some hole-in-ones are indeed pure luck, like if you hit a tree and it bounces into the hole. But the ones I saw, including mine, were just good golf shots that went into the hole. It's rare but it happens. You should tell her son congrats next time you see him.

Sure, it's possible for a rank beginner to get a lucky one, or skull a shot and have it roll 150 yards, bouncing off bumps and maybe a rake, and go into the hole. Those are luck. But if you are making golf shots that have a chance to go into the hole, you're probably a decent or even very good golfer. There's an appropriate story about this very thing.

Gary Player was doing his morning bunker practice ritual before a tournament. IIRC it was at a course in Texas, and a cowboy on horseback had wandered onto that part of the course and was watching Player make sand shots onto a green. It wasn't long before one of the shots went into the hole. The cowboy said "Well, that was lucky." And Gary Player, in his South African accent, said "Yeah, it seems the more I practice the luckier I get."

My Grandfather had two holes in one over his lifetime. He was skilled enough to accurately place his shot and lucky enough for it to go in.

He only saw one go in the hole though. The other was an uphill shot where all you saw was the flag where the cup was.

A hole in one is a great feat. I have seven so far. They are 95% luck. You need the skill get the club onto the ball, after that its in the hands of the golf gods.
BUT, an ace on a par theee can happen to almost anyone, as they are designed to be hit in one shot. A double eagle, a 2 on a par five or a 1 on a par four, is a far more rare feat. The odds are roughly triple that of getting a hole in one. I have three, but only ever got to see one actually go in the hole.

Your neighbor's son just used up a year's worth of luck-factor. Hope he got laid recently, he's in for a dry spell.

👍
First hole-in-one I ever witnessed was on a par-4. A short par-4 to be sure, the guy that did it used a 3-hybrid. I've also seen two hole-outs on the second shot on a par-5. Best I can say I did was a 100 yard hole-out on a par-5 on my third shot. Hit a good drive and cut the corner on a dogleg, was left with only a 165 yard approach shot, totally boofed it, and the ball rolled right next to the 100 yard marker. 56 degree wedge went kerplunk in the hole. Also during a 4-man scramble tournament I hit driver while the group ahead was on the green getting ready to putt (a 360 yard par 4) and I hit my driver about as good as I am able with some draw. It was pretty windy and dry conditions that day, and I'll be damned that my tee shot rolled all the way across the green, hit the pin still moving too fast to go in, and went off the back side to the right. The guys on the green wanted to give me a dirty look but saw I was on the blue tee box waving at them and just shook their heads.

I'm 60 yr old, been playing since 20, and play to an 8 HDCP. I have zero aces but have witnessed three. All were on par 3 holes. I'll never begrudge the accomplishment for someone, but skill plays a debatable role for the average hack.

I suppose that if you hit the green in regulation, it's likely to go in the hole at some point, but I'm running out of time here.

My one and only ace was on a 173 yard par 3 into a howling 30 mph wind. Hit a full 3 wood and it hit the front of the green and slowly rolled into the hole. I was playing at a 9 handicap at the time but that shot was pure luck.

Been playing golf on and off for 20 years or so now. Never witnessed a hole-in-one in person before. Best I ever done was an Eagle on a long par 4. Tee shot down the center left me 150 to the hole. 8 iron 2nd shot hit the green, bounced once, hit the pin, dropped in the cup.

Shots like that are what keep me coming back to try my luck again. However I truly suck at the game.

I remember being a kid in early teens, and went golfing with Dad and his friends one day, and looking up in a tree next to a bench waiting for other group to tee off......and I spot a golf club up there stuck in the branches....plain as hell, went several times more, and after a few weeks it was gone......figger the fury of the guy who slung the club to get it stuck in tree branches at least 2 stories high......more like 3-4 stories by my memory of it though..... pointed it out and everyone was laughing pretty good.....
