I recall reading about this years ago. From what I remember, the crew were insubordinate types. Real ball busters, hard edged and a bit nuts. Hence them rigging up the plane with extra guns.

Unreal. These guys were legit for sure. The bombardier getting shot to pieces and still going for his guns on his last leg and about to die. That's a man right there. A real man.

And they literally pulled that aircraft out of the scrap heap, and did what they did. Rule breakers, and hell raisers. Men among men right there.

I'm impressed with all the extra machine guns they fitted. They knew the history of the airframe and added extra insurance.
