Default almost busted from facebook Marketplace ( from another forum )

One of the mods had to deal with the police after finding a good deal.

Quote:
This past Friday, an ad popped up in my local Facebook Marketplace for a bunch of miscellaneous tools, including a nice looking Proto brass hammer. My son had just mentioned that he was looking for one, and so I replied to the ad, asking if he would sell it separately from the group.

Sure, the seller said, and oh, he had lots of other tools, including an anvil. Well, I wasn't really in the market for an anvil, but when I got there, he offered it up fairly cheaply, so I figured, why not, I could always flip it. And flip it I did, posting again on FB marketplace. I got a call, set up a meet. Two guys show up, the interested buyer and a friend that he brought along.

SO, I show him the anvil, we chat it up a bit, he asked a few questions about its history, etc. Well, I didn't know much about it's history, but told him that I'd just bought it from a guy who apparently does estate cleanouts. Anyhow, we struck a deal, and that's when the guy's 'friend' pulls out his badge and announced that I was in possession of stolen property.

Well, shit.

Lucky for me, not only did the 'buyer' (who was also the rightful owner) and I know a number of people in common, who apparently spoke well of me, but I also had a trail of communication with the guy who sold it to me. I gave a statement, and promptly helped the rightful owner load the anvil back into his truck.
I'm out a bit of cash, and a bit pissed at myself for not being a bit more aware and questioning.

So, please - be vigilant out there. Be aware, and careful about who you are buying from. Of course, you can't always tell, but something being offered cheap can be a clue.
I guess a good "cover your ass" would be a receipt with your and seller's name on it plus a picture would be a good idea too. A normal, above the table seller, shouldn't have a problem with it.

I was looking for some used tools a few years back to fill some trucks for my business. I found a relatively local guy who had just what I needed, and lots of it. I went to look at the stuff and could tell that much of it was stolen. some of it was from one of my trucks, the stuff had my company name printed on it. I called the dude out and he told me to take what I thought as mine. I took one item as proof then went right to the local cops(insurance had reimbursed our loss). I showed the cops the proof, and gave them an address. dude had just been released from jail a few months earlier and was hitting all the contractor vans he could find. the cops suspected him but needed proof. he quickly went back to jail.

If the previous "seasoning" is bad, build a good fire and put the offending pan in the bed of coals.

Let the fire burn out completely until the pan is cool to the touch.

Reseason and you have a good cast iron pan to cook on. I had to do that on a small cast iron pan I got that made eggs taste terrible

Modern aluminum/lined with some kind of ceramic? coating is the way to do on that, gets 'burned' just let it soak with detergent in it for a few hours....clean as glass......

I buy the old Lodge...it is better than the new Lodge. I have both. I usually try to find someone selling Grandma’s old pans. I discovered this when I inherited my Mother’s cast iron when she passed away. Some were my grandmothers. Those are so old they do not have a brand.

I’ve also put them in the oven on the clean cycle. Leave them in the cycle and then let them cool.

You would be surprised at the younger people selling grandma’s pans.
