Default Got kid ‘gun’ for Christmas and took it back yesterday
He said a bunch of his friends had Airsoft guns, which are the same as Bb’s except they fire plastic pellets. I did some research and found out owning one in New Jersey without a firearm license is a mandatory three year sentence!!! Holy moly. I felt like shit taking back his gift, but neither his mom nor I were behind getting it anyway. Oh well, first world problems.

Holy shit, that's crazy!

It is hard to imagine, but BB guns, paintball guns, and Airsoft guns are considered prohibited weapons in New Jersey. If you do not have a valid firearm permit or firearms ID card allowing you to carry one of these items, you could endure serious legal problems. Because NJ law makes only a slight distinction between a deadly weapon (such as a handgun) and a toy (such as a paintball gun), you may be subject to prison time if you are caught with a BB gun, paintball gun, or Airsoft gun.

Yup it supposedly all changed in 2008. I never wanted even a BB gun in the house, but he is a responsible kid with good grades, so we had a talk with him about what the rules are. Unfortunately the first piece of research made this a complete no go. We dropped $250 on the kit, (which of course cannot be returned) so it will either be destroyed, put on eBay or dropped of at popo.
