Why would you spend between $750-$1,000 on a amp if you've only been playing for one year? Buy a cheap guitar and equipment. If he has the passion to play and has no problem practicing a lot, then he can upgrade his guitar and equipment. Have him get a good teacher, teachers are a dime a dozen. I know a lot and play with a lot of musicians that are self taught. Everyone wants to be a star but not pay the price. He may want a set of golf clubs next year and say Fk the guitar. Go craigslist and go cheap. |

When I got my Telecaster (Jap copy), I did a little work on it with the help of a friend who knows how to set one up, then I asked an extremely talented musician friend to play a few songs at a gig with it. Then I could never blame the instrument for the fact that I can't play worth a shit.

I'd leave the guitar your son has alone. Find your budget and hit the music stores, eBay, local classifieds, pawnshops.
Several brands out there that offer models for any price range. Let your son know how much you're willing to spend, and let him try out several guitars and see which one he likes best. The larger stores; Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc, will have more brands to view, and that saves a lot of traveling, but, I've experienced in shopping for a new guitar that the smaller private owned stores are more willing to work with you on the price.

You lose interest quick in the beginning. After a year and you still have the passion then you know you're not going to sound anywhere like Pete Townsend or any other famous guitarist. Somebody playing for one year isn't going to be that picky that a $500 dollar amp won't do. |

We bought a new Boss DS-1 and that rounds out his gear/electronics for now. He wants to one day have either a Warlock or a Flying V but is level-headed enough to wait until he gets better. Between scouts, karate, chess club, girlfriend he doesn't have much time for one on one lessons so he uses his laptop and learns from there. |

Guitar and amp seems fine for now...I'd try and let him spark his own imagination in sounds with the git/amp combo he currently has.
I run a Danelectro Hash Brown flanger, and Cool Cat chorus pedal. Don't forget to buy the short cables with 90's to connect them. . |

My father passed away recently and my mother and I were going through some old pictures she had.
Start early. Sad, because I should be a LOT fuking better since I’ve had a guitar in my hands for a very L O N G time. |

I agree if one knows what to look for you can get a cheaper amp. But it’s also a great way for a beginner to get screwed. I priced it according what a decent tube amp goes for at Guitar Center. Like a new Blues Junior or Orange, Marshall, Vox in the 20-30 watt category. For a grand you can get a reissue Bassman or at a deal a reissue Delixe Reverb. I paid $1800 for my 64 original Deluxe on Craigslist. But I knew what I was looking at and had an amp tech gone through it to ensure it was the real deal. It has transformed my playing. The amp is as important as the guitar if you want to learn fast. Having a decent instrument means having a decent amp. That’s how you stay interested. [brag]But what do I know. I had 20-50 kids a week paying me for private lessons for years. (Got me through college boo yah!)[\brag] I’ll ignore your next response because I know you would argue over the color of the sky. |

Where did i say you were bragging? You got some issues dude. Maybe those other posters got under your skin about you bragging at the other forum I never felt you were bragging and i never called you out on that. Your problem is EGO. Quote:
Now you can ignore my next response. But i play in three different bands and one thing we don't have or tolerate is musicians with ego's. OBTW I'am 68 years old and started in the 4th grade playing music so i thinks i've been a around a little. And i've learned to listen to Musicians and their opinions without posting about my exploits as a Musican constantly. |

DJ post videos of his band. Sacredgrooves posts up about his gear and music stuff Thomas often posts his playing Strats N Vettes post about his playing Aerovette posts his singing (which I’ve said is better than I many times) I challenge you to find a single post where I say I’m great or even good. find just one and I’ll permaban myself. I often post I don’t deserve to even play with the guys I play with. I share video because most normal people without huge chips on their sandy vag enjoy them and ask me too. I hope my friends here will confirm all of this is accurate and true. Insecure people often confuse confidence and ability with ego or arrogance while there is zero substance (e.g., show me ANYTHING ANYWHERE where I’ve talked of my musical prowess. Here is a hint. You don’t get to perform with the big boys if you have a big ego. That’s the first thing that kills you. I’ll continue loving my immensely positive, healing association with music. You keep on dogging everyone on Internet forums. I think I know why you don’t post anything about your playing. Highjack over, apologies to the OP. More like CF every day around here. Let me go find a video of me fumbling through a great song with amazing players. I stand by my advice as a teacher. Playing in bars means zip when it comes to producing great guitar players. Most of my students surpass my skill and go on to other teachers or conservatories. What I claim works is backed up by decades of specific experience teaching kids. Tell me about your band. You should be proud to post about it. But let’s be honest. You hold me to a higher standard because and because you love strife. It’s all fun and games until someone directs a joke at you. Ah, no harm no foul. enjoy your bitterness. |

I love the sound of of my Jackson-V body guitars and BC Rich guitars with EMG passive pickups.
As for the distortion pedal, get him a good marshal tube amp and let him learn how to adjust the gain to get a great clean tone when strumming lightly and then getting the dirty sound with harder strumming. The dirty channel on those is usually so good he wouldn’t need the pedal (assuming it’s a metal zone, right?) |
