Default AC Repair...wish me luck

Yeah, I called "the guy" and apparently he wants me to finance his summer vacation trip. $2500.00 to install an evaporator coil that I can buy for $320.00.

So I will BE the guy on this one. I'm going to DIY it. Shut the high side off at the condenser, run the pump a SHORT time and shut the low side off.

De-solder the coil and slide it out (goes in like a drawer).
Slide the new one in and attach.
Draw vacuum on the coil and lines and make sure there are no leaks, and then open the condenser back up.

What could go wrong?

I have literally NOTHING to lose if it works. If it doesn't, I only need to evacuate and refill assuming no leak.

You are paying $2000 for his knowledge and warranty. So you screw it up, it will be $3000 to fix it.

Jeff,

Buena suerte!

Also, via con Dios, although I hope this one is not necessary.

Having said that, if the A coil is leaking, then you'll have to add refrigerant, too. I'm guessing you determined there was a problem when the AC failed to cool properly?

I had one of my A coils replaced maybe 8 or 9 years back. You could see the oil spot where the coolant oil was leaking. I was told it had to be replaced, but I always wondered why it couldn't be fixed. A little brazing?

Current techs probably don't have the skills to repair it, remember when you'd never replace a radiator or the like. Take out and the guy would braze for few bucks. We're a society of remove and replace, no more repair.

Compressor went out on my unit early last year, I wasn't paying the stupid tax either. Bought a set of digital gauges, a vacuum pump, and a new 2.5t condenser for $1k. Put that bitch in and been rocking the cool ever since. Commercial can be pretty complex, but just how hard is a residential unit. I can replace the damned thing every 5 years and still come out ahead.

Might be cheaper to relocate to Michigan where people only use AC to annoy the neighbors.

After seeing what you can do with wire, I'm sure you'll get this fixed in no time

Do you have the equipment to evacuate the refrigerant and then reload it, plus the extra that may be needed?

The guy that did mine years ago used the compressor itself to suck the remaining freon from the system into the compressor, and to hold it in the compressor. He R&R'ed the A coil, added freon, and voila, cold air again. I thought he'd have to have a separate canister and equipment to pull a vacuum to recover and hold the freon, but no......

I was the A/C repair on Sunday myself ( must be a Jeff thing )

Thought the blower motor had dry bearings. Pulled the motor, used a carbide scribe to punch a hole in the cap and added some oil. It was quiet for a little while.
Then it started making more noise. Noticed the blower fan had a wobble.

Turned it back on and listened to a horrible sound as the fan hub spun against the outer blades.

My friend Jack ( my A/C heater guy ) was on a commercial call a couple hours away .

Looked up the part on Amazon and the freaking fan lists for almost $190.

Cleaned it off , grabbed some EvaDur welding rod and TIG welded the hub to the fan blades.( actually closer to brazing with that low temp rod )

It's working great and my replacement blower fan wheel ( $90 off ebay) will be here Thursday

Good luck but nope. I got screwed on a new water heater, New Years day but I’m still here. Can always make more money but Time is scarce and ultimately, finite. I can do a couple of extra deals at my business, throw money at this type of stuff and generally save in the long run.
