My older dog a black Labrador Retriever (Chloe) was a gift from a wealthy family. She is now 10 and from a line of top tier retrievers. I had her pro trained and we bird hunted for years. She still wants to run/fetch daily but her hunting days are over.

Our other girl is just a pet. She’s a 7 year old chocolate (Brandy) and super sweet. She has been behavior trained but she is not a hunter.
They are both jealous of attention from us. Especially Chloe who is super attached to me.

They are always by my side when I’m home. I take one or both with me to the farm occasionally but man that is a chore. They love to run off and explore.

They both are the center pieces of the home. Pain in the ass and a joy at the same time. Every room in the house has accommodations for them. They sleep on the floor custom beds my wife made and sometimes I let them sleep in the bed with me.

I love them both like the air I breathe and will be more saddened by their passing than any person I know who has passed.

We consider them both a blessing and our home would not be the same without them.

Love my 2 little ones more than any human. Dog spelled backwards is God. I believe there’s a reason for that.

A rare time that you and I agree!

I like cats, but am horribly allergic, so I have lived with them in the same house, but don't think I could ever have a cat of my own.

I have loved dogs all my life, and my best friend right now is "Miss Belle". She is a purebred GSD, so she is wicked smart, and "talks" to me and my wife constantly (that my wife would not believe is possible until we had her for a few years). She is 12 years old now, and although generally in pretty good health, she needs a lot of care to treat her chronic conditions, which does make it hard to travel as the local kennels are not interested in doing for her what my wife and I do.

Having recently turned 60, and having arthritis problems myself, I think the reality is that Miss Belle is, at very least, my last GSD. The thought of trying to do for another dog in my mid-70s that I struggle to do for Miss Belle today, is not pleasant.

Hopefully, Miss Belle will be with me for at least a few more years, but I am aware of the statistics associated with the breed.

I've had good cats, one great one, and one bad one. The bad one started crapping in the house after my son was born, so he got the ax.

The great one was after that. Cleared the field mice out our house, then the barn, then moved onto frogs, snakes and birds. He loved my children, tolerated my daughter dressing him up and hauling around in a toy baby carriage. He was all black, and on Halloween would climb on top of the mailbox and surprise our guests.

I would argue that dogs are GOD's greatest creation.

Wow talk about a small world. I had a neighbor that said he had a black cat that looked forward to Halloween every year that did the same thing.

Just A Dog

From time to time, people tell me,
”Lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or
“That’s a lot of money for just a dog.”
They don’t understand the distance traveled,
the time spent, or the costs involved for “just a dog.”

Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a dog.”
Many hours have passed, and my only company was “just a dog,”
but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a dog,”
and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a dog”
gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it’s “just a dog,”
then you probably won’t understand phrases like
“just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.”

“Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of
friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.

“Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience
that makes me a better person.

Because of “just a dog,” I will rise early,
take long walks and look longingly to the future.
So for me and folks like me, it’s not “just a dog,”
but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future,
the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

“Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and
diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it’s not “just a dog,”
but the thing that gives me humanity and
keeps me from being “just a man or woman.”
So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog,”
just smile — because they “just don’t understand.”

Dogs, cats, spiders, pigs, and horses are like different colors. You identify with one, and a long relationship starts. Yes, dogs last 8-15 years, and that's unfortunate. In my opinion, when a pet dies, it's okay to grieve, but eventually, getting another pet can help heal the pain.

You asked, so:

Ringo is about 11 pounds of the meanest, strongest, nastiest of any creature GOD has put on Earth,,, pound-for-pound he has no equal.

BUT, HUGE BUT, he is a wimp at heart, thunderstorms send him running under our bed, and shaking more than a San Andreas Vault tremor.

We have given him endless cardboard boxes to tear up during storms, it works for a while, but he also goes after the corners of the leather sectional.
We now have deterrents, so the couch will look decent for now, and I will not replace until the seating is worn.

I love my Ringo, there are some negatives, but none to ever make me have any regrets.
Ringo is an ahole, but he is my ahole, he would take a bullet for me!!

Cats/Dogs can act like their owners and take on certain traits, according to recent studies. Both genetics and environment play a role in shaping a cat’s personality and behavior, and those factors can interact in complex ways.

A cat owner’s negative behavior or displaying anxiety in the house can influence a cat to feel anxious and unsafe. Cats view their owners as family members and may mimic their behavior as a sign of affection.

If a cat or dog is an asshole, it's learned behavior.

Default Maybe OP should consider a dog who thinks he's a cat?
