Default Sciatica

First taste of nerve pain called sciatica and I’m seriously considering euthanasia. Never felt pain like this and it’s rendered me nearly immobile.

Went to the doc on Sunday and they gave me a steroid shot, a pain shot, some prednisone, gabapentin and tramadol. Nothing seems to help? Been watching YouTube videos on treating it, waiting on my follow up with my doc. Feels like it might be getting worse after doing some of the recommended stretches and exercises.

Anyone been through this before? Any advice on things I can do to heal quickly?

Thanks,

Must not be too bad if you can walk or go to the doctors office for treatment.

Every time I had it, I was almost totally immobilized, almost frozen in place with pain. Would take 1/2 hour to crawl on all fours to the bathroom and slowly lift myself up leveraging the vanity. Then shuffle to the pisser.

I usually endured the pain, tried to lay in positions with minimal movement. In a coupl cases, it took a month for it to disappear. The last bout, I needed pain relief and the moron doctor's assistant said to come in, wtf?, you crazy stupid bitch! I called the doctor direct and he got me some "stuff" to take.

It's been 7 or 8 years since my last one. Not looking to another round anytime soon. But it can get triggered in an instant, doing simple things. Golfing, picking up stuff wrong, piss poor vehicle seat ergonomics, long drives, etc.

Got to be tough when you get old.

Lat year I had a bout with trigeminal neuralgia, often described as "the most terrible pain known to man", and it got so bad my wife took me to the emergency room. The doctor on staff prescribed morphine, which I refused. My wife, an MD herself, consulted with her medical partners and they had me take https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbamazepine. It worked immediately, like a miracle.

I have some Methocarbamol on hand, sounds close to what they gave you. Messes with my memory a little but here’s hoping.

Wouldn’t call what I was doing “walking” per se but I managed to get there.

See your advatar and I’m wondering if you were a Tanker? I was for awhile.

Had to get rid of my C7Z because of it. Working the clutch pedal put me in tears twice and damn near had me as the cause of a wreck more than once.

For me, laying still along with booze or a pain pill would help. Sometimes a good back massage would help (rare), but being immobile helped the most.

Damaged/inflamed nerves, talk to your doctor--

Gabapentin/ 300mg
Amitriptyline 10mg
Tylenol 500mg

Neurontin/Gabapentin, and Elavil/Amitriptyline are neuromuscular pain meds (Elavil is also mood elevator).

Take all three at once x 4 daily

How it works:
The area surrounding the damaged/inflamed nerves readily rejects foreign compounds/chemicals (your body at work), but allows the introduction of acetaminophen.
Neurontin and Elavil "piggy back ride" on the Tylenol to the problem location.

Great for headaches, toothaches, hangovers, sciatica, arthritic pain, ect...

My wife was just diagnosed with Sciatica on her left side. She hasn't been prescribed anything as of yet. They just sent her to PT and they have her doing some specific exercises. She says the exercises do help her some.

I've had it off and on for 20+ years, beginning with a mechanical injury lowering a barbell while twisting.

Read a book by a Dr. Sarno that helped me get pain free for almost 2 years with mental re-assessment. I was skeptical but it worked.

I've had it come and go for the past week or so. Sitting at the computer makes it work but I can't help myself. The Barn, and Kazoos and Subarus, needs me. I have one of those inversion tables, and hanging for 3 minutes about 3 our 4 times during the day really pulls the spine straight, and unloads the nerve pinch point. That, and meds.

Did they do an MRI? I went back the next day because my big toe and top of my foot had turned a light purple/blue color.

Doc did some nerve tests and sent me off for an MRI. Determined my problem is located at L5 in my spine based on the MRI and nerve tests. Not the worst scenario but not the best, either.

I didn't realize how serious this stuff can be. Important to stay on top of it or risk some serious life complications. Hope she continues to feel better.

I have an extra vert in my lo back, and a L O N G history of lo spine/back aches and pains.....went along for years growing older with periodic pains, but then they all subsided as I learned how to get along, all that lasted some decades, but time and rust caught up with me, and so had lo spine surgery a couple years ago....cut out some cartilage from some joint down lo, and scraped up a vert too....been far better untill the last few months, and now it's down LO in the tailbone section.....so I pay attention to how I sleep and sit in the lounge chair....I suffer from uncle arthurRONGus all over from skull down, so I have gotten to the point it's almost impossible to work under my vette, and under the dash is a super PITA.....

Tell you how good my doctor is. I had to tell him I had sciatica. He was like:

Nothing helped. They gave me a medrol dosepak that worked great for about 5 days but pain resumed after it wore off. Not motrin not flexeril. I lost many hours of sleep and it was very painful to walk.

It eventually went away after 4-6 weeks. Hope it never comes back.

My wife already claimed it, was even sharing her base plan with me, after my demise.

Apparently, she wants to move to Las Vegas to be near one of her H.S. girlfriends and buy a small Ranch style house to live out her remaining years... Bitch.

This ^ type of shit is why I don't save or invest more. I got dreams too, like hooking up with one of the Friday Five. But I suppress them and remain loyal to my girl.

Unless she dies before me, of course. Vegas isn't my thing but maybe "The Villages" in Florida? Knock some of the dust off them older single chicks.

I forgot about that, about 5-6 years ago, well before the surgery, I had spine aches, and took my wallet to my front pocket....which helped the PITA a lot for a while.....

August 2016, I woke up with excruciating pain in what I called my hip. The nurses kept saying it wasn't my hip, it was my butt. Anyway, it was right where the thigh bone connects to the pelvic bone, and they all said it was sciatica, which I am sure it was.

Sciatica is a general term for pain caused by an impingement of the sciatic nerve. Said another way, saying you have "sciatica pain" really isn't very helpful, as what you really want to do is figure out what is impinging the nerve, and treat that as the underlying cause, rather than just treating the symptom = pain.

In my case, the impingement was caused by a nasty herniated disc at L5/L6. I'll save the gory details and skip to what worked: Oral steroids. I did a 7 day steroid pack, and at the end of it, I thought it didn't work. But about a week or two later, I started to notice that each day, the pain was just a tiny bit less than the day before. It was 6 months before I could sit in a chair for more than a few minutes, but after a year or so, I would say I'm basically healed.

Good luck! Make them give you an MRI!
