I don't know if BMW was the first to try this. The first such scenario I heard about came from Toyota, who charges a subscription for the Remote Start feature.

Considering that gas is $ 4.50+ a gallon, discontinuing a car that averages in the mid 30mpg range, with an actual 40mpg achievable on highway trips, might not have been a great idea.
