Default Let's talk about 12v air compressors to keep in the truck/car

What does everyone recommend? I have an old Chinese Freight compressor that I keep with tire plugs and the plug tools, but it's not really geared to actually airing up a truck tire. I'd like to put that in my car and get something more substantial for the truck.

Thinking about this:

If I get a flat tire, I'm just going to buy another car.

Smart move. I keep one in each vehicle as well as plugs, tire screws, tools, etc. For my F250/16k gooseneck, I have a Viair 450P-RV because of it’s duty cycle, output, hose length, and accessories. For my suv and cars I use a Viair 70P for it’s compactness, power cord length, threaded hose, and relative duty cycle and output. My tire plugs and screws are bit more detailed.

Both compressors were bought around 2015 and have worked perfectly. I use them fairly frequently also. Whatever works for people but I would not skimp on recovery gear.

If anyone recommends to just call AAA or a tow truck, you know they’re betas and unable to fend for themselves. slap:

Just bought this lithium battery powered compressor. Works great and was cheap.

Only takes 3 hours to fill a tire

Then again, I guess you can do that while you're waiting for your EV to charge

And eating gas station food.

It’s been decades since I’ve needed to air up a tire away from home. Vette has ZP tires and Explorer has a full size spare. I have a large upright compressor in the garage when I need air at home and it’ll fill a tire in no time.

ARB does set the standard. I actually have a Viair capable of filling a 37" truck tire. It's probably $100 more than the one in the OP. @Steve_R sold me a Super Tank but I haven't mounted it yet.

I haven't had to change a tire in a while, either, but if I'm out at night, I'd rather air up and plug a tire, vs. trying to change a tire by the side of the road in the dark. Figure it out later in the light of day. And my little shitbox Cruze has a donut spare, so if I'm going a long distance, I'd rather take my chances with a plug than riding on the donut. Obviously a blowout necessitates a tire change.

The nice part about the tank is you can take it off and carry it anywhere, and it will run any air tool you have. No small compressor can do that.

I wouldn’t want to run far on a donut spare either, but changing a tire in the dark on the side of the road may be easier and faster than finding and plugging a hole and airing up with a tiny compressor.

My Porch came with one since it has a space-saving spare. It worked fine when I had to use it, but I broke it when I went to put everything back. So I bought another one, similar size, and it fits inside a panel in the back.
