Let's see your Favorite Gum

In the mid 1970s, purchased a lot of Grape Bubble Yum. Not cheap back then. If I wanted cheap, I'd buy Bub's Daddy. over a foot of gum for half the price of Bubble Yum. Favorite flavor...apple.

Back in junior high school I'd buy a 24 count box of these for 90 cents tax free at a local candy wholesaler and sell at school for 10 cents each or 3 for a quarter. It was fun for a while until the vice principal busted me and shut down my operation, I think a jealous competitor dropped the dime on me.

The, then newly introduced ‘Bubble Yum’ was a bit of a splurge vs. the faithful stand-bys, but for us borderline teens there was something very unique and satisfying about the soft chewiness, improved and longer lasting flavor vs. Bazooka/etc., and the attractive color of the bright & inviting rectangular, multi-piece package which could be a pain to open from the ends once in awhile. There were a lot of options to choose from but BubbleYum ranked right up there with my limited, unreliable and discriminating weekly candy money!

Oh yeah. Bub’s Daddy. That’s a blast from the past I’d completely forgotten about. There was no other gum when I was a kid soaping windows on Halloween.

Class trip, 1969 to the Swell Bubble Gum Factory. We were given a private tour of the plant where I first hand, witnessed workers as they walked past, spitting onto these huge vats of gum.

I have not put a piece of gum in my mouth since that day!

My friends were not nearly as disgusted as I was, and would trash pick pounds of gum from the dumpsters....How gross it was!

I’ve worked two jobs in breweries. While I never saw behavior as disgusting as THAT I’ll never drink beer again as long as I live.
