Default Computer Experts, How Bad Did I Screw Up

The old HP took a crap, bought a Sony Vaio E Series, Intel Core i7, etc. Cost $849. So far, I really like it, fast, clarity is the best I've ever seen, 17" flip up screen, and I'm sure you guys know a lot more about it than I do.

Being "with the workings of a computer illiterate", and the salesperson telling me they're all good, how bad did I screw up with this purchase?

Thanks.

Sounds fine. You could of probably found something similar cheaper, but Sony makes a solid machine.

We paid about that much for Dell business-quality desktop PCs, and that didn't include the screen. Core-i7 seems a bit overkill for a laptop PC, but it won't hurt anything but maybe battery life (and they probably got power settings appropriate for that).

You could have got a lesser system cheaper, but then you get what you pay for.
That seems good value for the price.

(Did you get Windows-8 ??... If so, how do you like it ??)

Looks like a pretty good deal for an i7, depending on the RAM, HDD etc...

Nothing wrong with that. The only downside is all the bloatware Sony puts on their computers. Took me hours to peel it off the last Vaio I bought a few years ago. The i7 is a great processor for a laptop. It has lots of inherent power-saving features. It's also great for a desktop. Best processor out there hands down.

How much RAM and how big is your hard drive? BluRay?

Probably the best brand for not over-installing crappy bloatware is ASUS.

Thanks for the input.

6 GB RAM but how big is the hard drive (probably something like 320 GB.) 64 bit is the operating system type, but is it Win7 or Win8? I actually sorta kinda like Win8, in that it's not as bad as I thought it would be.

Never mind, I see that it is Win8.

382 GB free of 427 GB. What's that mean?

Tell me what model your Sony Vaio is and I will tell you what it will take to upgrade that paltry amount of memory it came with. 6GB is barely adequate nowadays.

How much better is an i7 than the i5? My Asus with an i5 that I got in late 2010 has been a great machine. Would I notice a difference?

I'm not a hard core computer user, no business, no gaming, no art or graphics stuff, couple Word and Excel documents, some pictures, email and the internet, that's about it.

I probably have more than I need.

That's hard to answer, there are so many versions of both chips that some i5's are equal to or faster than i7's.

Depends on what you do with it if you'd notice a difference. Surfin' the barn, about the same

Not sure how it exactly stacks up to an i5 but after building my first i7 machine recently I can tell you that it is a really amazing piece of hardware. It throttles up and down automatically, runs amazingly cool, and the quad cores make the computer scream. Pair it with a decent graphics card and feed it 16 GB of RAM minimum and toss in a SSD boot drive and it's pretty damn amazing. I showed a friend of mine my new build last night and he was staggered at how fast it is.

Just as an example, I currently am running just a single 120mm CPU fan and two front panel fans. I have the CPU fan turned down to about 25% of full speed. That's it. The CPU is running at 86 degrees.
