We didn't have gas shortages in Northern AZ that I recall, but we had to try not to wear out the lic plate screws when I went to visit my dad who lived in San Diego at the time.

I was still a few years away from driving then.

I talk to the 55 and ups at work and they were regaling me with stories of 14 percent 30 yr mortgages and such. Now the fed has destroyed the dollar with free money.

I was a teen back then, and so did I. A couple of them as a matter of fact....one was a garden hose and a 5 gallon can. The other was a hot little number I was dating in high school....she'd go in and flirt with the attendant with the top two buttons undone....I'd pump 5 gallons in and reset the pump and pump another 5....and a third if there was room

This was all LONG before computerized pumps at the self serv....they used binoculars.

I was 28 years old in 1979 , "what a bunch of young pups you guys are"...Yes,I remember the odd and even gas rationing ( what a pain in the azz that was). Yes, I also remember paying 20% interest on a 1980 pickup truck I bought.. Yes, I remember Carter screwing up everything he touched...For the record, just because I liked John Denver music, doesn't mean I liked John Denver Politics...They were some really screwed up times....WW

I almost forgot to tell you my story...... I had a green 78 CJ5 Jeep at the time, it had tags that read "MPV" which stood for "Multi Purpose Vehicle" .. There was an oriental guy down the street that ran a small Exxon station I use to go to..When the odd and even rationing started I told him the MPV on my licence plates stood for "Military Patrol Vehicle" and that I was exempt from the rationing because it was a Military Vehicle ...This guy bought it and gave me gas whenever I needed it... It helped that I was living only about 2 miles from Camp David in the town of Thurmont Md and almost always wore a camo jacket....

No Pete, I had my hair a little longer then my father liked, but no beads and tye dyed shirts...I did have a Chevy van and one year I saved all my money, quit my job, and traveled around the country with a friend for about 10 months..We hit every state in the continental US and had a great time.."Sort of like what your doing now"....... About 2 years later I saved my money again and took off for Alaska in the same van with my buddy for about 8 months..I was a free lance photographer at the time, and when I got back I sold enough of my photos to pay for the trip... Best trip I ever had, and met some great people... Man , those were the days, no responsibility, no worries, just travel around and have fun.....WW

Wish we could.....but I AM going to be at the next Bomber Run. Already have the time off at work. Marco needs a set of shocks, an oil change, and a full gas tank and he's ready to roll. Mrs. Friz doesn't have any vacation time, so I'm flying solo on this mission.

OK, since my block is no good, I've been looking at options. El Paseo Machine Shop has a freshly bored .030 351W block I can have for $200. He also has the crank with a fresh .010 cut. The machinist is going to get me a price today to build the lower end of the motor for me...but he's estimating around $650. I can then pick up some aluminum heads, a cam kit, and intake and carb and finish it off. Think I'm gonna go this route.....I have several friends that have used this shop and it has a good reputation.

Got to work on the driveshaft last night. Both U-Joints were damn near seized....so with the assistance of a vice, a couple of sacrificial Chinese sockets, and a BFH, both are out.....not voluntarily mind you, but out. Now the monumental task of cleaning up 42 years of caked on grease from a leaking trans and pinion seal. And, of course, changing said pinion seal.

Still have some clean up and welding to go under the hood, but it's coming along. Two VERY long weeks at work haven't helped, but I'm sneaking in 20 minutes on it whenever I can and it's coming along.

My BFH....or BFF at the moment. The "409" bottle is full of 50/50 Castrol purple degreaser, and the ear protection proved necessary.....The U-joint fought a valiant, but ultimately futile battle.

OK, just got off the phone with El Paseo Machine Shop.

He is going to build me a short block with the .030 Windsor block he has. Install pistons on my old rods, install crank and pistons, cam bearings, and freeze plugs for $765. Not bad. I will need to hunt down a cam kit, timing set, oil pump, heads, intake, carb, and exhaust manifolds. I can reuse my old timing cover, oil pickup, pushrods, oil pan, valve covers, etc. If I can have it in the car and running for $2000, I’m happy.

Having the rotating assembly already built means it goes together a lot quicker too.....no measuring, etc.

The project is starting to take shape....
