Default Has anyone here struck a goldmine garage saling?

Made a great find/buy at a garage sale, flea market, auction, dipsty dumpster or whatever. Ever found hidden treasure?

Found this old Milwaukee grinder for $25 at one. Lady just wanted it out of her garage. Weighs a ton. Switch was missing and somebody had rigged up an extension cord to make it work. I installed a new switch and wired it correctly and it works just fine now. Heavy stand.

Let me check with my father in law….his basement is PACKED full of useless garage sale ‘gold finds’.

When he moves to a home or passes I swear we’re renting a full size roll off dumpster for all his shit and it’s all going straight in there….

I would move it up to the front lawn and have a Big One Day Sale. I'll bet marketed correctly you could make some bucks.

I joke a bit….we’ll probably just have an open house or estate sale first, I’m sure a TON of junk will be leftover that we’ll then toss.

I found $20.00 in the dryer a time or two. Does that count?

Not if it was your dryer.

As a kid in 1970, an old guy down the street was moving and had a dumpster full of furniture, etc. In a desk I found some antique mechanical pencils, one engraved silver from 1915 that's a work of art and three or four gold-filled ones from the early 1920's. That got me started on fountain pen collecting. I found a $400+ Parker 'Big Red' Duofold at a thrift shot for $5 once. It's from about 1925. A friend recently bought a bottle full of change at a local garage sale for $3. It had $38 inside. Click image for larger version

It would be cool to see that all restored, but the cost of restoration would probably be more than it would be worth. I like that reality show where the guys in Las Vegas restore old toys, Coke machines, gas pumps, etc. to their original condition.

Pffft, no big deal. LOTS of those are scattered everywhere. It was easier than counting them.

I'd be more impressed if you found an actual Biden vote.

Was never my thing but the wife couldn't pass one up.

Back in the mid-80's she'd bring me bags full of paperback science fiction books and collections of short stories bought for 10 cents apiece practically every weekend. That went on for a couple years. Had several hundred of them written over a time span of the previous 30 years. Some real jewels in there... Asimov, Heinlein, Zelazny... Name the author, I probably had it.

Packed them all into a huge footlocker after reading (I'd read a book in a day back then). Sent the trunk home with my daughter a few years ago for five of my grandkids to read. I still remember loading that thing in the back of her car, that was a job and a half

I owned a scrap metal business years ago. I was picking through the junk one day and found a silver choker style necklace I had bought in some aluminum.
Probably paid around .02 for it.
Made by Faget Mignon in New Orleans. I think she's still alive.
I sent it to them to have it professionally cleaned and appraised.
Current value......3K
When I retired, I took 16 lbs silver and a little over a pound of gold home with me.

We were camping and off roading in the Nevada desert about 10 years ago and ran across a bunch of garbage that had been left at an old trailer. Just trash. One of the items was a brass valve about the size of a dinner plate. It had frozen and had cracked. My buddy insisted it was valuable as scrap so we took it apart so it would fit in my rig with all the rest of our gear. When we got back into town, he got $148 for it at the recyclers. Red brass. Not bad for a piece of trash.
