Default HELP !!! Rear drivetrain noise.

2004 convertible; automatic; bone stock.

1. I have a whirr or growl that kicks in at about 40 and and is at it's loudest between 43 and 50 and then as the pitch increases, the sound gets lost in the surrounding highway noises.

2. It is speed related regardless of what gear I am in (auto) or road condition.

3. I just jacked up the rear. Nothing is leaking

4. 28k mile car half of which were just put on over the last year and a half and I never noticed the noise until I replaced the rotors and calipers about a month ago

5. Since I noticed it, it seems to have gotten worse and now I feel it in the e-brake and steering wheel.

6. It shifts fine through all the gears although the launch wehn Ihit it is often hit or miss. If it is cool out side or the car is cool, it screams. Once I have been sitting in traffic, it becomes a dog off the line.

7. I just a few minutes ago jacked it up, turned off the traction control and with it off the ground, took it to about 40 and it is pretty loud

8. I decided to see if it would do it in reverse and it does NOT. I took it to about 40 in reverse and did not hear the same sound.

NOW WHAT ???

I did not buy the bearings because I really wanted to confirm that was the issue. Now I am totally lost. It is sitting on jack stands and all I can do is stare and think.

HELP ME PLEASE

Why only in drive?
This last test rules out tire noise for sure and probably CV joints. It has me thinking "differential" which is going to be $$$$$$$$$$.
The wheels have absolutely no play at all at 6 and 12 or 3 and 9.

Part of your post leads me to believe that it relates to something you did while changing the brakes.

Noise wasn't there before, and USUALLY a problem can be traced to the last thing you did.

Plus, now you feel it through the e-brake. Just a cable joining the two sections.

I'd look at that first. If the brakes are maladjusted, they might contribute to your problems.

Good luck.

What may also be helpful, if while jacked up you have someone do as you did and run it up to 40. While you look and listen to see if you can pinpoint the area the noise is coming from.

These two things suggest gear noise.

A bearing, axle, etc would not make noise in only one direction.. The meshing of the differential gears, and which side of the teeth are being loaded, would.

Thought it's quite rare to hear of a factory (Getrag) assembled diff becoming noisy from incorrect tooth mesh, it's not impossible. If it was a tuner-built box, then it's a more common complaint.

Finding a good, used differential isn't that costly. Especially for an A4 car. Lots of people with A4s upgrade to 3.42 ratio, leaving the 2.73 and 3.15 boxes somewhat undesirable (and cheap). Changing the diff can be done in 2-3 hours without the need to fully remove the drivetrain.

If it turns out to be this, you also may wish to consider upgrading to a 3.42 diff out of a 6spd for a little added acceleration kick, but when doing this, a higher stall tq converter becomes a recommended compliment, as is some minor tuning to adjust shift points. Not absolutely essential, but recommended.

Being that it's impossible to ID a noise of this nature over a forum, I would find a trusted mechanic near you to have a listen and advise accordingly before proceeding or just throwing parts at it.

I did some further testing. The noise kicks on like switch when the car shifts to 2nd gear. Whatever it is has to be in the transmission. Leaving it in first, I can get up to 40 and the noise is not there. Starting in 2nd it is there. It is someting mrelated to the part of the tranny not involved in 1st or reverse.

It is advice i'd love to take but "trusted mechanic" is an oxymoron in my area.

Then ya have to trust your instincts!

I was able to tell where the strange noise in my Vette was coming from by CAREFULLY, as Paul said, getting under the car while running and on jacks. We were able to determine it was specifically coming from the torque converter area in front of the trans. Confirmed it with trusted certified Mechanic. Oh and Sneaks diagnosed it right from the start!

I did a video with my phone and as soon as I read how to post it I will. I NOW think it isTHIRDthat is noisy. I think with the wheels up, the car is out of first at idle in gear. If I hold first it makes no noise. Holding second (may not be possible) seemed quieter. Slowly accelerating in 3rd or D it kiks in at 20 mph. I'll post the vid and maybe it will help.
