In my opinion, it's a big popularity contest. I can't find the best way to explain it, but the same mentality that posts a Youtube video in hopes it will take off, is behind this. Or like an inventor that is seeking that next big thing. There are people that search for something they can find that they can get others to rally around and they become leaders in their own minds. They came up with it and it gives them self worth. It is their 15 minutes of fame. I am certain there are people that are, at this moment, looking around them and trying to figure out if they can find something that will make them popular, or get them facebook "likes" or make the news, or perhaps make them money via a lawsuit.

They are out of school and there is no one giving them a pat on the head and a participation award. They are bored and feeling valueless. These "Treasure Hunts for the Offensive" get the endorphins flowing. It is desperate people starved for attention.

Take a look at who's protesting. You have basically two groups. No, not the extreme left or the extreme right.

What you have are:
First; The young and naive who are full of passion and energy, but not much sense. They need a crusade. Any crusade. They haven't a clue to what the facts are, they don't care what the facts are, all that matters to them is that they are rebelling. The sweet, sweet release of all the passion, emotion and energy. Watch them when they are out there screaming, they are absolutely orgasmic. Tap into and manipulate that resource and you've got a powerful force.

Next; The crowd that is somewhat older and knows that they are losers. They know that they have pissed away life's opportunities, or are just too damn sorry to amount to something; which just makes them hate themselves even more. And rather than face that truth about themselves and do something about it, they'll try to elevate their self worth by tearing someone else down. It's really all they've got. So again, any crusade will do.

The difference between the left and right is that the media has made it damn convenient for the left to go ape-shit. They have given license as well consequential and moral immunity to go on a rampage. Once those barriers have been removed, these two groups are going to go nuts. It's like a dam breaking, and in their minds they are the righteous. Rational and sane reasoning left the building a long time ago.
