flowers for a birthday?

it's my wife's Bday is tomorrow.
she likes flowers.
I intend to get her some.

however, I'm not too fond of the idea of "let's spend $40 and put some flowers in a vase and wait for them to die."
I was hoping to find a florist that could put together a "boquet of bulbs", so thay my wife would get flowers (which she likes) and she could also plant them (which she likes)

but I cannot find a florist that sells anything "live"

ideas?

bulbs are tricky, usually go in the ground in fall for next spring (tulips), or they are overwintered in the basement and put in the ground in spring for summer blooming. point is, they take time and attention. maybe go with something already blooming that is a perennial, so she can enjoy it each year. even better, something that blooms near her birthday, so it will be extra special.

and enjoy dinner out too.

flowers are okay if you've been married for 6 years, but not for a first (and last) date.

I thought about Home Depot and getting some flowers out of the garden shop, but I'm about as useful for picking out flowers as I am doing some other generic, gender-biased task.
That and I wanted her to get them while I was gone (surprise! and all that)

Here's something, many local floral shops are FTD. Find one in you area...here's some for like $20



Then go to the nursery and get some that can bloom whenever she/you would like. Do you know which flowers she would like to plant? If not, give her the flowers and take her with you for the second part of her gift...let her pick them out

many years ago, my sister was driving a local MD road, noticed a nice arrangement of roses by the roadside. stopped, took them home.....that's night's news recounted the 1 yr anniversary of a traffic accident that claimed the life of a HS student.....in the same area the roses were found....oops....

they were beautiful for about a week.
