Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is caught in one of the worst aviation crises in American history, as Boeing jets fall apart in mid-air and while on the runway. The latest near-disaster happened when a JetBlue flight nearly collided with a Southwest Airlines flight at Washington, DC's Reagan National Airport on Thursday morning.

For any Zero Hedge readers who are aviators, you already know that as a pilot in command in airspace controlled by a tower, you're putting complete trust in air traffic controllers to guide you on the most effective path possible without hitting other planes.

But that was almost not the case on Thursday morning when air traffic control instructed Southwest Airlines Flight 2937 to cross runway four at the airport while JetBlue Flight 1554 took off.

The audio is absolutely shocking. For any pilot, it sends shivers down your spine...

This is not the first operational error by towers across US airports. In February 2023, a landing FedEx cargo plane nearly collided with a Southwest passenger at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas

Swiss Air jet almost collides with four other planes in near-catastrophe on JFK runway

A Swiss Air jet nearly crashed into four other planes at JFK Airport after a communications error put them on the runway at the same time.

The Zurich-bound Swiss Air flight had been cleared for takeoff on April 17 and began rushing down the runway, but hit the brakes after noticing that air traffic control also cleared the path for four other planes, ABC 7 reports.


Air traffic control audio from the airport captured the moment the Swiss Air plane was given the all clear for takeoff on runway 4L, only for the pilot to notice another plane taxiing nearby.

“Swiss 17k heavy rejecting takeoff. Traffic on the runway,” the pilot told air traffic control.


Swiss Air praised its staff’s quick thinking in aborting the takeoff and avoiding a likely tragedy at the New York airport.

“Due to the high level of situational awareness and quick reaction of our crew, a potentially dangerous situation was quickly de-escalated,” Swiss Air said in a statement.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.

The agency did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for additional information.

The near-collision at JFK took place just a day before two other planes almost crashed at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport just outside Washington, DC.

As with the New York incident, two planes at the Virginia airport had been cleared for takeoff on the same runway at the same time, according to the FAA.

It took about 30 seconds for the air traffic controllers to realize the mistake, desperately calling on the JetBlue and Southwest Airlines planes to stop before they collided.

Nothing will happen until one nails the other.

Many moons ago, around the time Reagan fired them all, I requested a specific take off direction which was routine because I was headed to the hospital to pick something up. A minute later he's yelling at me similar to wtf are you doing?

Words were exchange and two other pilots hearing it all chimed in backing me up but it was too late. I had requested an immediate return and turned around and landed right in front of the tower and was going inside to rip on him.

The Controller in charge was already standing outside with his hands up waving telling me "I will take care of it, I will take care of it!"

It is a thankless job.
