I don't remember that, but then I live in California and we didn't have 'round the clock news on TV then. Sounds nasty.

Yes. We had multiple fatalities from one that tore through here. One particular family in particular. We lived a few miles from it's path, but I remember watching it go through in horror. All there was in those days was the civil defense. A few people came through looking for volunteers to help and they all climbed into back of pickup trucks to go help. I remember the strong smell of the broken pine trees and complete destruction.
Here is the only family survivors story. Several others beside this family also suffered fatalities. It is legendary here. I've lived through several of them. Not something I would wish on my worst enemy. http://www.northwestgeorgianews.com/...d4450a79c.html |

I was at a friends house in Xenia when the tornado hit. We went to the basement and when it was over we had to push the door open to get out. The roof of the house was gone. 33 people were killed in Xenia that day. A sad and scary day.

Wow. First hand! Your experience seems like an apocalyptic movie scene. As a young boy I can vividly remember my parents (from Indiana - Ft. Wayne and Decatur) talking in genuinely horrified, and concerned hushed tones after that tragedy.

friend of mine (Bruce Boyd) was the person that took the 8mm film of the tornado while it was in Xenia.
My dad took-off with me and a neighbor kid as soon as it was reported on the radio. As we approached the Arrowhead neighborhood... total silence; almost every house flattened, nothing but bare slabs showing. |

We got one of the smaller ones in the Chicago area. I was playing in the park when it struck; I remember running home with sand and dirt being blown into my eyes. One of the 100-year-old giant trees in the park blew over and we spend the next couple of days playing in it.

I remember. We moved to Joplin in spring of '74, after the spring school semester was finished. I was going to start 8th grade and then go to the high school named Parkwood back then, and my parents showed me where I'd be going to high school. The gym was knocked down by what they then called "straight line winds" but we now know them as microbursts. I was like "Damn, why are we moving to a place that has weather that destroys high schools?"
In 2011 the Joplin tornado completed the job started in 1974 by destroying that same high school, which was then known as Joplin High. They have since rebuilt Joplin High, to the tune of something like $70 million. It's really nice though, I did a tour of it just before it opened. Waaaaay overkill IMHO. It was like "This is our one opportunity to build a super expensive school, let's not blow it!" |
