As I previously mentioned I have Travelers. Not sure if it's their policy or maybe state law, but I can have work done at the collision shop of my choice (probably has to be state licensed).

My insurer, Nationwide, will do the same. However if I use their shop all work is warranted until I no longer own it.

My neighbor Rick went through a 40 year string of Ford trucks. Back in the day a 350, then a few 250s, then a long line of 150s. A new one every year. I had two full-size PUs back in the 1970s. I found that the smaller ones did everything I needed.

When I was working and having to carry injection molds back and forth, I probably never had to carry anything close to 1,000 lbs.

And my Tacomas carried 1,500 lbs. of coal just fine.

But contractors and farmers (like my buddy) mostly need full-sizers.

I'm out the deductible for the month or three that the bean counters negotiate. What's the interest on a G, a few dollars? Not exactly an issue.

The whole point is, you're making this more complicated than it has to be. I'm assuming old guy isn't going to contest fault. You are the claimant, meaning, you make a claim on the old guy's policy, they determine liability and coverage, they inspect, they pay. Hell, they probably have their own pro shop that they'll guarantee work at, too, if that makes a difference.

Involving your insurer 1) leaves a record of claim activity, which insurers don't like, and 2) just makes things harder. They'll do the same legwork, investigate coverage, determine liability, inspect the truck, and will pay part of the claim, then they'll contact the old guy's insurance, make the claim, his insurance will investigate, determine liability, then cut a check to your insurance company, then you'll have to chase down your insurance company to get the deductible amount.

Why not just cut out the middleman entirely? You really only need to bring your carrier into it if the other guy's carrier balks at paying for some reason.
