each state is allocated the number of electoral votes that is equal to its number of House Representatives (determined by population, recalculated every 10 years after the census is taken) plus the number of senators (2 each state).

Because California has the largest population they have 55 Electoral votes.

The US is a constitutional republic. The reason we don't elect a president by popular vote is, we want to avoid tyranny of the majority. The electoral college helps protect the Constitution, which in turn, helps protect the citizenry, particularly the minority.

Think about it. The majority in your city votes that all houses have to be painted pink. You don't want to paint your house pink. You depend on your natural, God given, constitutionally protected rights to not paint your house pink. You, the minority are protected from the majority.

We also don't have one national election for POTUS, we have 50 separate ones. A candidate has to win enough states to win the presidency. If it wasn't for that process both coasts and their large cities, along with Shitcago, would decide who the president is in every election. They'd love that, but the country would suffer badly.
