A petaflop is a measure of a computer's processing speed and can be expressed as a thousand trillion floating point operations per second. FLOPS are floating-point operations per second.

"The fastest U.S. supercomputer, number 3 on the Top500 list, is the Titan, a Cray supercomputer at U.S. Dept. of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory with a theoretical peak of about 27 petaflops."

China's new supercomputer takes world lead; Titan drops to No. 3 on TOP500 - Atomic City Underground

"ORNL is currently working with IBM on a next-generation supercomputer that will be called Summit and reportedly capable of 150 to 300 petaflops. It is scheduled to be delivered next year and achieve full operations in 2018."

Infrastructure to deliver the power and cooling for it is being built now.

Everyone is aiming for the first "exascale" system, using exaflops, a billion billion calculations per second. These systems are expected to occur in the 2020's.

A few years ago China claimed to have found a way to cram a petabyte onto a single DVD (1000 Terabytes) Huge news for about 30 seconds then I never heard anything else about it.
