Default Finally lost my uncle to dementia

The world is a lesser place today. Unfortunately the past few years have been pretty rough as he has declined. I worry about my aunt now. She is 93 and very frail. And even worse is, I have an aunt in Va with bad dementia, and her husband had a stroke last year. They share a room at a nursing home. And to add to all of the above my step sister with whom I have always been close to has dementia. I'm 58, and the family dominoes are starting to fall. It is going to be a rough few years coming up.

The obit gives you a good sense of who he was.

Sorry to hear, and I feel you. My FIL and my Aunt are currently in "facilities" dealing with end of life stuff.

How old is your step-sister? It's brutal when those problems show up in the 50s and 60s.

She is 72. Diagnosed 2 years ago. I saw her in October. We can pretty much talk about anything, but her short term memory is totally shot. She asks the same question over and over. It sucks.

Yeah, I've been there too, and it really does suck.

I'm sorry you lost your Uncle, but as much as it sounds harsh, I often wonder if the person who is suffering badly from dementia is actually in a better place when they leave us.

My mother-in-law (93) is in about the same shape; short term memory is just about gone. She *sort of* understands and accepts it, and she has, fortunately, not been extremely difficult to deal with. She's even still in independent senior living, but we're all anticipating the eventual need for advanced memory care (sooner than later).

More frustrating is the case of my best friend from childhood. He's only a year older than me, but he's developed vascular dementia over the past few years, with similar symptoms (i.e., short-term memory loss). However, his seems to be progressing pretty quickly and is already showing signs of more advanced long-term loss. Recent visits with him are mainly long periods of a blank stare, broken up by glimpses of "hey, I remember that!"

OP, very sorry for your loss.
