I heard of a bunch of back yards in this community being backed up to maybe 1/4 acre of an old family graveyard, the entrance chainlink gate was open for some time, so I pulled over to have my own look, most of the stones were toppled and the newest graves were from '80 or so, apparently some family members came along and cleaned up the mess, but nothing I have noticed in the last ten years now.....
I thought kind of odd to sell off the farm, and not the graveyard, and let the builders sub divide and built 1/4 acre lots all around the place.....weird to ME.... My folks are buried in a graveyard with past presidents of USA in it....but nothing fancy really..... |

I watched that show last night; some surprising information in it.
My sister & her husband have an old farm in Maine. The main house is connected to the barn by a covered walkway they refer to as a shed. At some point, they decided to replace the floorboards, & underneath they found an old headstone. (pic attached) They suspect that "Jane" is buried under their walkway. |

Years back (1972) my father (undertaker) got a call from the city to be the clerk of the works representing the city on a street construction project . Seems when they dug they upset a bunch of graves. With further checking they found out in the mid 1800s this was used as a paupers grave yard. When they were buried this area was right at the edge of the city, but as time went on it was deep in the city proper!
They had to relocate about 60 people to a real cemetery and law demands a licensed undertaker present. This was only a couple blocs from our house and I like all kids in that area used to play there. Needless to say some of these graves were very close to peoples homes and they were not happy about "what was dug up" I accompanied my father there on a couple occasions! A road improvement job that only was supposed to take a couple weeks ended up taking about 4 months and a hell of a lot more money spent. |

Friend I knew years ago lived in South Pittsburg, TN. His was an old house built in the late 1800's. When he bought it there was an old family cemetery, only I think four graves, surrounded by an old iron fence in his back yard. One of them was a Civil War veteran. I always thought that was pretty cool being a kid.
