my "new" calipers and how to read vernier calipers
I got an almost brand new of Brown & Sharpe model 572 vernier calipers off ebay for $26
Here's a close up of the vernier scale This is the explanation I use to teach folks how to read a vernier scale. One inch is $10 .100 of the scale is $1 Each of the four lines equals 25¢ By using that example, it helps understand how things add up. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Looking at the close up of the vernier scale, it shows 1.687 How you get there is 1.000 plus .600 you have three lines of .025 each plus you look to see which of the lines on the 0-25 scale lines up with the lines farther up on the scale. In this case it's the .012 ( 12 ) 1.000 .600 .075 .012 ____________ 1.687 ( which equals 1-11/16ths ) It's clear as mud, Right? |

Old school. Good luck on anyone younger than about 50 being able to do it reliably. If it ain't digital its not going to happen.

Don't even get me started on inexperienced people using digital calipers. There isn't any physical movement to watch ( like the scale on the vernier calipers or the dial of dial calipers ) and they just jam them against the part without a true feel and get inaccurate measurements

Those are great. The dial calipers came next and then digital. Since I'm in the calibration business, I always liked those types like micrometers - verniers. I know that the younger generation like digital, but you have to be careful when using them since they don't have a mechanical zero like the verniers. This means that you have to check zero before use. I had to teach this to several engineers, since most simply press the zero button and think they are good to go.
The bottom line is they all have pros and cons. Vernier - not easy to read, but very reliable Dial - easy to read, but the pinion gear can become clogged with debris if you are not careful. Digital - easy to read and probably slightly more accurate than the other two, but requires a battery and zero check. Oh, another advantage is inch/metric button. |

I'm not 50, but verniers are what I learned on years ago as a wee lad. I never got to the digital stage. I liked my B&S dials too much.

I don't know how many times I have grabbed someone's calipers and found that the gibbs are loose as hell. As much as .030 from the tips up towards the head. I even had to retrain the gal who "calibrates" them on how to check for this and correct it. Then there are the people who trust them beyond about .002" accuracy. Or the ones who crank the crap out of a set of micrometers. |

I'm just guessing, but the finer points of Slide Rule use are not needed?
