I would imagine now there are laser / computer devices capable of the measurements you need.

Yes, now there are. I went to old school track inspection school, you had to understand the principles.

Reminds me of taking out the steel tape as a freshman and surveying the campus. Don't forget to calibrate for temperature!

I watched a "disaster" show about a derailment blamed on string lining (assuming the show used the phrase correctly). They said the engine was surging around a curve... and this amplified the "string lining" effect.

A tanker car full of "bad stuff" emptied itself into a local stream... killing all fish over a 20+ mile stretch downstream from the derailment. I think it was in California???

They meant straight lining. If an engineer powers up suddenly with a train that has empties in front of loads while the empties are on a curve it can pull the empties off of the inside of the curve.

2 or more guys on any jobsite better calibrate their tapes... it is done before you start... everybody measures a distance, say 12 inches. The tapes are "calibrated" by bending the hook tab so everyone's tape reads the same so when a finish carpenter asks for a 22 and 7/8ths long board, the cut man's tape reads the same.

When we built out timber frame house back in 1985, we would all calibrate our tapes from a master, steel, high quality rule.
We did this every day, or if you dropped your tape.

You laugh but I bought a plastic stand for a mini fridge that came with a tape measure from China. One inch on that is about 1.5 real inches.

I doubt it. RR's are really good at cleaning up big messes. I bet they were running that line again within a week.
