[Woodworking] Cremation Box

Got an email from a friend last night. Their uncle passed away this weekend and they wanted to know if I could make a cremation box, and if so, how much.

Yes, consider it a gift.

Have a general idea of what it will look like. I had made a smaller box for their doggie a few years ago, and they said he liked it.

Likely mahogany and maple. Will have to get some lumber. Not enough in hand.

Rule of thumb is one cubic inch per pound.

Looked on google last night, and prices range from $60 to $800.

I have no idea how to price such work. Besides, they are friends in need.

Cremation box? The box that the deceased would be cremated in? Or the box to hold the ashes?

I plan on donating my body to science, so after med students give me a morbid nickname and cut me up into pieces, their tuition money will pay for my cremation. Winning!

I donated my brother's body to UT in 2006. Had to pay to get his ashes back.

I am supposed to be cremated, I suppose they just toss the ashes, but in this case wife has a side/side burial by the river plot....I would assume they can scatter the ashes as they want, and bury some in the plot.....why would I need a box?? I never dealt with this before......I just know to not waste money on a typical funeral and all that crap....

it is.

my point was that the commercial prices are all over the lot, with very little correlation of size or material to price.

a large one will be about 4-5 board feet of lumber. at a high end of $10/BF, that's $50 of materials, plus any hardware. at a low end, it's maybe $10 of materials.

it's time. it takes time and effort to make something pretty and durable.

My insurance agent's wife passed from breast cancer ( had it beat for almost 10 years before it came back with a vengeance ) and she had it set up to donate her body.

After the studies were complete, not only were the ashes returned but John got a number of handwritten notes from the student doctors thanking him plus it went into some details about what they learned.
