We have smoke detectors but I would hate to think how far along that might have gotten before they went off. I guess it’s off to BB tomorrow for a new Tv.

This one was a Panasonic Viera, 50” plasma and was about 12 years old.
Had a similar experience with the same kind of tv
Mine was powered up thru a supposed to be good power strip
Smelled a plastic burning smell, couldn't find the source, thought it might be coming from outside so ignored it then it got worse
Decided to unplug everything in that corner and found that that strip plug at the wall was the source.
All black and burned up
Replaced the outlet and plugged my tv directly into the outlet and the rest with a new power strip

I guess that the tv's draw a lot of power
Won't do that again

Ditch power strips and get UPS instead. Uninterrupted Power Supply aka battery backup.

I have one for my tv/stereo/video equipment, mainly because I also use it as a surge protector.

Up north I never used anything but one surge power strip, down here I have two of them, one to the outlet, then into an isolation transformer, then into another surge/strip into which the gear plugs......when I had the McIntosh stereo, the power amp was plugged into a dedicated 20 amp line, sprung off the bathroom whirlpool .....I have had 4 direct lightening strikes on the back yard damn 100' tall oak trees, stupid ATT ran the phone lines underground down the back property lines so all the trees in the back yards on this block of course are targets, and by 'extension' so is every electron in our homes.....
Since I been here 23 years, about 2 dozen trees have fallen onto homes and I have spent over 5k$ on tree removal, plus 3 I have removed myself.....two more to go......

I smell something like that, I don't stop until I find the source. Call me paranoid.

I had a similar experience with the smell and being unable to locate it. Turned out mine was a dimmer switch that someone had connected directly to the ceiling fan. When I went to bed that night I turned off the light switch and the wall was hot. Later I removed the dimmer switch and it about crumbled in my hand.
