Default Did I piss them off,,, better yet, do I really care

Youngest daughter in town, arrived last night, here for a day, flying to a wedding, back on Saturday, then she is off to shitcargo to live with a dood who seems to check all boxes.

So, I opt for Outback, get the big filet, an appetizer, $80+ with tax.
I advise will pickup and they ask how much is the tip,,, I tell them no tip and will see them in 30 minutes at the side door where they stack the to-go orders.
Lady on the phone immediately hangs up, no thanks, no see you in 30 minutes--rude as fuck!!

Why do I need to tip if I am not eating in, and I pick up my order at the door, as opposed to sitting in the parking lot for 10+ minutes waiting for my food to be brought to my car??

This crap is ridiculous, everyone wants to be paid $100/hr and get a tip for handing you the food order.

And this is why I prefer to dine at home,,,

BTW, wifey is out of town for four days, comes back late this afternoon, I hope she is not in the mood for Outback.

I am learning to hate the entire tipping process. I do my job every day and no one tips me. Their JOB is to cook, wait tables, clean. That's what they get paid to do. It's not on me to supplement their income.

A steak and an appetizer ran up to $80? Maybe at Ruth Chris, but Outback is the Taco Bell of steak joints.

Nailed it!!

This automatic tip crap is due to owners of business need you and I to subsidize the wages they pay their employees.

I have no problem tipping for table service, but not for counter and not for pick-up, eff that, it is a fundamental task of their job.

BTW, I have never tipped at 7-11.

The mandatory tip or service fee is enough to piss somebody off.

And zero chance I tip up front.

There was a n article not too long ago about the tip thing has gotten way out of control and a majority of people have had enough.
If they start talking with their wallets someone will listen.

Yep, any kind of service peep today thinks they need a tip just for doing their jobs, and aren't ashamed to ask for it.

I've been hanging around in bars since 1968, and I don't recall anyone leaving tips then or for a long time since. But in the past 30 or so years, yes, everyone tips the bartender even if it's a fat profusely-sweating guy. Hot babes? -- well of course.

And even worse, in eateries (if they don't know you) they ask for it up front now, as was your experience.

The first time I ran into this was sometime around 2000-2003, we went out with two other couples for dinner at this new place. When I went to pay at the register (cash) she asked "Do you need change back?"

What immediately went through my head: "STFU you stupid bitch. If I needed change for a tip I would ask you for it." That was extremely rude at the time, but is commonplace today, unfortunately.

It's just more of the ongoing dissolving of traditional Christian manners, humility, and "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

I always tip when I'm seated and being served. There have been on occasion where I don't leave a tip because of the crappy service.

Thirty two bucks for half a pound of beef. Who's crazier? Them for asking that much or you for paying it?

You're not missing anything. Ruth Chris the Pavlovian response to I want a good steak but know nothing about it.

We went to an Outback last year, once, because my fiancé who grew up dirty poor was feeling nostalgic, and it was indescribably bad. Not only did the food suck it ruined one of her few positive childhood memories.

There is one chain place that we have found a decent filet and that is Cooper Hawk, and only one of them. They changed their meat vendor, and it is really good.

Other than that, from eating at either nicer chain establishments or better private owned, and then going back downstream you can taste the antibiotic laden meat.

It has a metallic tinge to it. There is a very old school restaurant near us, their prices never changed, and its busier between 4pm and 5:30pm then the rest of the night. Saturdays/Mondays they have a fantastic prime rib special...we figured we'd try it for something else. Filet has great texture, cooked well, but it tasted like licking a battery. The prime rib they bring in separate from their normal supplier so it's totally different but everything else there is full of chemicals.

Tipping process sucks, so does the us restaurant industry. Tippees get paid like $2 an hour and have to pretend to like you to receive your supplement to their “income” so they can feed hungry bellies. Maybe pay an actual living wage?

Outside the us, there’s no line for credit card bills for “gratuity”, you just sign and go. They don’t need patron help. If you think the service was exceptional, throw a buck or two (equivalent) on the table on the way out.

Blame the industry, not the workers scrimping and saving every penny. Think restaurant owners want change? Yeah, no.

Haven't been to an Outback in over ten years. I put it at about the same level as Sizzler. And can't imagine going there to pick up and take out. The only reason we went in the first place was for the sit-down-and-get-served experience, but the food was always ho-hum.

our round table added a $4 service charge for the mandated minimum wage increase hike...as if that shit wasn't already priced too high.

This. I will tip 15% if its as described in the OP. Insurance.

A sit-down meal 20%, rounded up to the nearest dollar. For a bar tab it depends on the service, but usually 30%.

If I'm a regular at a joint and the food and service is good, I'm shellin' out extra clams- over 20% tip. Be kind to your waitress, George...
