Default My current project

As always my projects take way longer than I think they will, this last winter’s project and it is now mid-July and I’m still not finished . Anyway we needed a new gate into our back yard from the driveway, so it might as well be custom and hand made. My wife and I have our bachelors degrees from Michigan State and Eastern Michigan so might as well make those the theme.

After spending most of the winter and spring cutting, welding, and grinding the main gate frame, yesterday was CNC plasma day. Being that I don’t have one, I found that we have a local maker shop with an amazing amount of wood working, metal fabricating, jewelry, electronics tools, etc. Even though a few parts of the letters were too small for the plasma, what a great feeling to see the main part come off the plasma knowing I designed it. A laser would have done a better job on the letters but you use what you have.

Hopefully just another month or so of final finishing and it can go off for sandblasting and powder coating. At least at this point I’m positive it will be complete before the next winter

Cool

That turned out pretty good I even enlarged the picture to check out your welding and grinding.
keep the grinding disk flatter when finish grinding--no gouges that way

Thanks, I’m definitely still an amateur but I really enjoy metal fab. This was my first go around with cnc plasma, if I had know the letters wouldn’t have cut correctly I would have used a different font but nothing some time with a rotary tool and a file can’t fix
