I'll wait while you quote where I've said "packing fans to capacity into a stadium during a pandemic is a good idea."

Some additional perspective: The daily US mortality rate for smoking-related deaths is far greater than from COVID, and yet smoking is completely legal and the US and state governments rake in untold amounts of tax money. We could save 500,000 lives EVERY SINGLE YEAR, not just one year, by simply banning smoking, yet we don't do that. Why not? But, move along, nothing to see here because COVID deaths bad, smoking deaths okay.

I don't know if COVID deaths are under or over reported. I do know that the US is on track to have ~3 million people die in 2020 - the exact same number as in previous years. Huh, imagine that.

Approximately half of the COVID deaths in the US have been people over the age of 80 in long-term care facilities. How many of them would have died this year without the pandemic? Things that make you go hmmmmm...
Glad you agree SD works.

Can't argue the cigs, as you know I spearheaded our lung cancer screening program at my hospital, so I deal with this as well 1st hand. Big $$$ from tobacco companies is the problem. Not sure how to solve that one.

As far as the numbers: not sure where you are crunching your numbers. 2,852,590 people died in 2019, meaning at least 73,000 more people have died so far in 2020 than 2019, despite missing or incomplete data for October through December. If deaths continue at the weekly average of approximately 60,000 per week, at least 240,000 more people would die in 2020, resulting in more than 3.1 million deaths. If the population grew at the same rate in 2020 as in 2019 (0.5%), this would result in a death rate of 9.4 deaths per 1,000, making it the highest death rate in decades.

Sure, many that died were already older or had comorbidities. But like my nephew battling glioblastoma, he was given 18 months. Had he gotten COVID in the spring and died, his wife and kids would have been robbed of this precious time with him. My 74 yr old Mom with HTN and NIDDM could also have contracted it and died, but I could not live with the knowledge me exposing her, prematurely took her from us.

So if my religious mask wearing, social distancing and my getting a vaccine helped ultimately prevent someone from having a premature death, I am 100% OK with those acts of compassionate selflessness.

I guess I just see all the bitching an moaning about mask wearing/social distancing etc as people being complete selfish assholes. Shut downs etc are a complete other topic, so not directing the above comments to that.

PRAYING that this vaccine will start to turn this chit show around. As I stated, in 2 weeks we start administering to our high risk populations.

Nic, we’re really not that far apart in our opinions. Distancing works for any communicable disease, whether it’s COVID, the flu, or the common cold. Proper use of respiratory protection (heavy emphasis on proper) works. The magical 6’ distancing rule might (or might not) work well in some places but not in others. I have yet to see anyone in public using respiratory protection correctly, and I’ve seen a lot of useless pieces of cloth or plastic being used simply to show compliance.

Dr. Fauci, who many view as a God and whatever he utters as Gospel, says it won’t be over until late summer at the earliest. No medical or political agency has even defined what “over” means, so how will we know when we get there?

What criteria must be met to remove all restrictions? Who decides?

I obviously don’t know that answer but an educated guess is for the health experts to be guiding everyone back to the way it was.

Here when we opened things up it was done in 10-14 day increments (incubation period)

If numbers continued to go down then more restrictions were eased. I expect the same to happen again.

I’m hoping plexi glass in restaurants is gone but I’m suspecting hand sanitizer when you walk into any public place is here to stay.

I hope that’s the extent of the “new normal” but I’m sure there will be more

Let me explain my question a bit more: Nobody ever really said what objective criteria (case rate, death rate, hospital/ICU capacity, etc.) was used to implement anything. Until somebody or some agency defines what objective criteria will be used, and the goals, for easing various restrictions, it will be a mix of advice from various cities, counties, states, provinces and countries, with no agreement - which is exactly what is going to happen. Some places are locked down, some aren't, even though case rates are similar. Some places don't have mask mandates, some do. Some have restrictions on public and even family gatherings, some don't. Etc. Etc. Etc.

You’re asking for everyone to agree on any one of your points. That’ll never happen.

Correct. But wouldn't it be nice if at least each country could define what criteria must be met to loosen lockdowns, stop with the useless masks, and get rid of the stupid plexiglass shields? Without criteria how do you know when you get there?

It's like being in a race where the finish line is still waiting to be announced.

Hard to define a finish line when the track is being built during the race.
