Harman insert that we start with wood and once it gets cold enough, we burn chestnut size coal.

We had a stainless liner installed too.

We also put a vacu stack on top of the chimney to help increase air flow for a more complete burn. Worth every penny

I did the same, installed a SS liner and SS top vent. Wrapped the liner with a fireproof insulation sleeve with a SS metal wire mesh (like a chinese finger torture). Might be a good idea to have it looked at, I did this quite a few years ago....

My flue needs a colonoscopy.....

It was 2005 or 6,it was Christmas eve and we turned the AC lower
and burned a fake log from Home Depot. Merry Christmas.

The last year I cut all my own wood here was 2011. Been buying it ever since. Hardly worth it, but I can't get away from the tradition. Since then I only buy 3 FCs, burning half going into winter, switch to coal, and burn the other half coming out in the spring.

Been doing it since 1975 and always enjoyed the exercise and being in the woods in the cool crisp fall weather with all the smells of fall. When I went way up in the woods across the road I would take a jug of sweet cider with me for refreshment.

Pix from 2010 -- I borrowed my buddy's splitter the last few years, did it all by hand before that:

I had extra deep two car attached garage where I could store about two cords, for easy access to the house. The rest got stored in the side yard under a blue tarp. I'd refill the gagare pile as needed. One time I got lazy about doing that, and sure enough we had a big storm that required a bit of work to get access to the yard storage.

When I built my cabin I went with a propane stove, again Vermont Castings. Turn a dial and it's lit. Probably saves me a bunch of money as well.
Vermont Casting products are the suck! I have my old one in the garage as an anvil workbench....

I disagree. The woodburning stove I had in NY could load from the top and burn 8 hours on low. My current LP version is smaller, but it provides great supplemental heat, and looks very elegant.

Keeping the temperature below 500 as recommended by Vermont Casting is ridiculously low….. I’ve had to rebuild the internals several times. Put the old Woodsman back in after rebuilding it. WAY better!!!!

I never had a problem controlling the temperature, and mine was a catalytic model.

Regency wood burning insert in the fireplace structure.
Heat half the house with it during the winter.
The family room, kitchen, dining and living rooms are toasty warm.
The bedrooms are good and chilly, the best for sleeping.
Totally love it - it can run for weeks sometimes
