Default My daughter's summer plans :)

You all know by now that my 14 year old daughter is a car junkie like the rest of us. She wants to get into mechanical / automotive engineering. She feels that doing some interning is in her best interest.

As such, we just made arrangements for two different intern projects for her this summer. She will spend 3 weeks at an architectural firm doing AutoCAD and another 3 weeks at my race sponsor turning wrenches...uniform and all.

She took CAD in school this semester and has gotten very good at it. I'm sure she'll be able to contribute some great things to the architects.

She REALLY wants to work on the guts of a car, and we felt an opportunity to shadow a mechanic was a great way to start. If these are successful, I suspect it's something she would do every summer until she's ready to go to college.

She will be volunteering her time at both places. This is not for pay, simply experience.

That is a great idea. I am sure she will have fun based on it is something she likes doing. I wish I had known what I wanted to do that young.

Really neat to see a girl who likes to work on cars!

I know Dad is very proud of her!

Unfortunately, she'll have to put up with the neanderthal boy types who will probably give her a bit of a hard time. But I'm sure you prepped her for the idiot factor. Good on both of you!

That's great.

That's some great parenting too. Setting her up for a very nice future.

And unfortunately, that never goes away!

I went to a track day at Watkins Glen several years ago, and I was the only woman there. Everyone was looking at me and shrugging their shoulders, scratching their heads, wondering WTF I was doing there.

Then came the drivers meeting when they went over the flags and their meanings, and they talked about the unfurled black flag and how you have to pit in to get a 'talking-to' from the course marshal if you did something wrong.

So it's all quiet and this guy behind me says, "If she (pointing to me) gets the black flag, do I get to spank her?"

Thunderous laughing everywhere. You would think that that would have made me blush, want to shrink into the floor, or pray I could teleport somewhere else.

Nope. Instead, I turned around and said, "Honey, get in line!"

It's how you deal with it that makes all the difference. I'm sure she will be just fine.

Very cool, Craig. Now, she'll be in training to be an "Expert Car Witness" just like the character Lisa Vito in "My Cousin Vinny".

Later??

It hit when she was 8. She's already taken a handful of competitive laps in the black C6. She gets her permit in July and I will be able to get her racing end of summer and into the fall with the Central Florida SCCA.

Considering she's served meals at the Salvation Army for over 3 years, she's quite comfortable around odd people. She knows she's not going to be a mechanic, she just wants to know everything there is to be known about cars.

Taking into account my relationship with the dealer, I'm sure she will be just fine. I know most of the mechanics pretty well.

Maybe she could design some aerokits for Supervettes.

Does she want to go to college? I think mechanical engineer would be great. Lots of scholarships for girls in the engineering field. My son is a ME. While he and his best friend were in high school and college he worked (no pay) for a super late model team. His best friend, that practically lived with us, is a ME for Pratt and Miller.
