PSA: High speed connection and still get buffering on Youtube. Here is the fix.

My service provider has upped my speed and I am getting a consistent 20-25mb download speed.
I've always had problems watching HD videos on youtube and couldn't figure out why.

Until I found this. Have Time Warner Internet but can barely stream YouTube? I did an experiment. : technology

For the techies out there, it looks like this problem could actually be caused by intentional bandwidth throttling that is actually permitted by YouTube and built into their system.

Then I found how to apply the fix in a simple way to understand here. I blocked 206.111.0.0/16 like mentioned in the first article.

I've managed to block those caches! What you need to do is use Windows Firewall (or iptables if you're linux) to block 206.111.0.0/16. As far as I can tell, this won't block any other websites hosted on XO, but YMMV. Instructions for blocking with windows firewall here. Once 206.111.0.0/16 is blocked, youtube's player logic will fall back to Google's datacenters and stream at beautiful speeds.

For the past 2 days I have had ZERO problems watching 1080p videos on Youtube with absolutely no buffering.

Just passing it along for others who may have the same issue.

Shoot. I'm using Online Armor for my firewall. I'm using Windows 7 currently, is that Windows Firewall any good? I've not trusted Windows firewalls for such a long time, it has become habit to turn it off.

I can't follow the link in OP because I'm not using Windows server.

What else can I do to get the same results? Sooooooooo tired of dealing with the buffering even though my connection speeds are pretty quick.

I've stopped using anything other than windows firewall and MSE for antivirus.
If you are using a router there is a firewall in there also.

I'll see if I can find something for your firewall.

if you have the free version of OA you cannot block ip's that you choose.
Is yours the free version?

1. Start
2. Control Panel
3. Windows Firewall
4. On the left menu click Advanced Settings
5. On the left menu click Inbound Rules
6. On the right menu click New Rule
7. Click Custom and then Next
8. Make sure All Programs is checked and click next
9. On the protocol and ports options leave everything at its defaults and click next.
10. On the scope page on the top of the second box where it says Which remote IP addresses does this apply to? Click These IP addresses and then click the ADD button.
11. A box will pop up. In the first open line(this ip address or subnet) enter this 206.111.0.0/16 click OK to close the box and then click Next.
12. Select Block the connection.
13. On this page all 3 boxes should be checked by default then click next.
14. Name it youtube or whatever you want and you're done.

I would always start the video; but then pause it, & come back later. The video would them be fully cached.

But that "trick" stopped working a few months ago; cliclking pause would cache just a small portion of the video... an it would not stream the rest of the video until I started to watch it again.

Had to use this method on the last job for certain instances. It was much easier than dealing with inbound/outbound rules on the ASA5510 Cisco Firewall and then getting the router to match.

KP finally became useful to the forum for more than just moose fcking jokes. The devil must be freezing his nads off right now.
