Geometry help.
I never was good at geometry. Someone would ask me to find an angle, all I could do was point at a crooked line and say, "There it is."
So here is the question: Side "A" is 6 inches long, Hypotnuese is 29.5 inches long, Side B is 29 inches long. What the hell is my angle? TIA! |

I was very good at geometry. But that was 50 years ago.

sine of small angle = 6/29.5 = 0.23389 so angle = 11.74 degrees. |

sin(a) = 6/29.5
a = 11.73 degrees The other angle is 90-11.73 = 78.27 degrees |

To work it out just using the two sides (not the hypotenuse) then it would be:
tan(a) = y/x = 6/29 a = arctan(6/29) = 11.69 degrees I'm thinking this is really your angle since there's no way your hypotenuse is 29.5 with the other two sides being 29 and 6 respectively. There's a measurement error there. I mean, it's probably very close to 29.5, but if the other two sides are precisely 29 and 6 respectively, the hypotenuse is actually: sqrt(6^2 + 29^2) = 29.61 inches. |

if you don't have a calculator handy, you can also solve this on the slide rule, using the C and D scales to find 6/29.5 = 0.203, and then flipping it over to read the angle off the S scale = 11.74 degrees.

And children, always remember, all you need to totally know everything about a right triangle is, other than it's a right triangle, is two more pieces of information. The length of any two sides, or a side length and an angle. That's it!

I've got a friend that was on a slide rule kick a few years ago. Buying them at flea markets and antique stores. He was hell bent on ignoring modern technology.
When he finally got a smart phone, he downloaded a rotary dial app for it. |

Tell him if he had a real rotary phone, he could dial just by clicking the button on the cradle that hangs it up

I often make use of hypotenuse while squaring construction. I don't know what the hell it is but I use it somehow.
