Defaulting on our debt obligations sounds great, until you realize two things:

The vast majority of American debt is held by Americans through retirement programs. I guess the OP is against the Union funds getting paid ahead of others.

Debt continued to rise during Clinton. It dropped as a percent of GDP simply because the economy took off (primarily due to the rise of the internet). But the debt itself continued to skyrocket.

Here's what the debt is:
