Home A/C took a crap
Condenser unit outside won’t start. Capacitor gone bad. I just replaced the cap 2 years ago. And the fan motor. It’s 80 degrees in the house right now. I can’t wait until the sun comes up. ****. And it’s a holiday.
I can fix it, but I need the cap. None of the box stores have them. Hoping Ace Hardware... |

Possible amazon has and can be there in a day? I've had decent luck with some parts like that from them, others not so much so... Good luck and buy 2 so have a spare.

Chinese caps don't last long, but harder to get a US made one. Like Rodnok1 I usually keep a spare around. If you find one & it's Chinese - get it anyway. Then order a good US one and use the Chinese crap as the spare.
Listen, this ain't the best advice, but it might work. Is the motor humming, but just won't spin up? Yep then the start up side of the cap is shot. Here's the bad advice - take a thin fragile stick and try spinning the fan, while it's humming. It just might start up. You want something somewhat fragile so that if the fan starts & you don't get it pulled back quick enough then you don't want the fan blade hitting it and stopping again. Wear glasses, gloves, & long sleeves. Don't use your dick! |

I was thinking about the short life and I think you guys nailed it. Chinese crap plus temps at 100 for a month. It runs constantly and I know caps hate heat. I’m also going to clean the condensate drain. It’s working but we have never cleaned it so I’m sure it’s full of Snide. Holy shit was it hard to sleep. |

We keep one of those in our bedroom anyway. Our bedroom has West and South facing windows and it really bakes in there during the SOCAL Summertime heat, Central AC doesn't do great cooling that room down (hottest in the house). Portable AC takes the edge off, good investment.

Two weeks ago when one of my compressors quit, it turned out to be the thermostat that failed. Zero noise was being made outside, which had me questioning the cap, a voltmeter proved out power was good, just no signal coming from the thermostat.

I'm surprised that copper thieves haven't already looked into this market. Used capacitors, fans and compressors would be a great supplement to their income. Just sell the stuff on Craigslist.

I couldn't find a start cap locally this week either, so we called "the guy". 10 Minutes and $155.00 later the house was cooling down again (GASP!!).

Reminds me of the mid 50's when my folks bought two Admiral window a/c units....one for my room and one for their bedroom.....and one day I got home from screwal and Mom had the whole house cooled down pretty good, center hall colonial cold air coming down the staircase.....

On close inspection, one of the terminals (fan) on the cap has some carbon on it. This tells me something shorted in the cap. The fan still works fine because I can get it started by spinning it. It runs for about thirty minutes and shuts off.
Changing batteries in thermostat had no effect. Thankfully it rained like a mutha last night giving us some relief. Now we wait for new cap that should be here today. Need to find a USA made one. We also cleaned the condensation drain. It may need some Freon or what ever they call it now. I’ll get it serviced when I can. |
