Those damn trains run all over killing innocent people just walking down the road, if only they'd stay where supposed to be.

Maybe this is a dumb question…but if he started over the tracks and there were no flashing lights or gates, how would he have known a train was near? Looks like he was in the middle of crossing when the signal just started coming down.

Is there some sort of route planning that is supposed to happen to make sure this doesn’t happen? To make sure he’s not crossing at a time when trains may be there? I’m assuming they have to have some sort of permits (or…???) when transporting something oversized like that?

Depends on each state but yes they're limited to where supposed to be at and train companies are supposed to be in the loop just for this reason. Sometimes they can hold a train up and tell them when no trains in area for whatever time. Total failure of escort service, haulers and planners. Only thing i can think of was a turn was missed or a road was closed and they had to take a detour (absolute nightmare and worse case scenario).
Train service crews, electrical companies are usually on stand by to move a wire or signal also. Even if it was a failure of equipment that just happened, someone should have notified the train line immediately (smart person woukd have numbers and contacts already).
All this assumes Aerovette moving company wasn't involved.

That's a nice idea, but have you ever seen a train that actually runs on time?

I don’t have access to statistics but I believe more are running at their scheduled times than previously. Hunter Harrison was the former CEO of Canadian National Rwy. He started a program where trains left the yards on time rather than waiting for additional cars on the same routing. He was able to lower CN’s operating ratio and increase profits. He left CN to take over as CEO at CSX here. Implemented same type of system but he died shortly after taking on the job. A couple of other U S class 1 railroads have also implemented this method to some extent.

I will defer to Val for more specific info but I spent 30 years on the rail supply side and I know this was a big deal for the class 1 operators

The verdict is still out on this one and there is a LOT of stakeholder dissatisfaction with what the results have meant in the real world. Too much to go into here. Holla at cha boy if you would like to hear my thoughts.

I feel qualified to answer this since I raced a train and won once. Have never and will never try it again. In my case it was night time, stopped at the crossing and looked both ways but didn't see the headlight (it was so close the roof of my car was blocking it). You can still know it is coming because they're extremely loud and the ground shakes. Feels like the world is ending... And for some it does.

I don't know... A drunk woman drove down tracks couple years ago in little city friend lives in. She got out before train hit unfortunately.
Train pushed the truck into a switch and the switch broke causing the derailment of 13 train cars and 2 locomotives and damage to five nearby passenger cars struck by debris from the crash. That's a high speed area nothing short of miracle nobody was killed as houses were nearby.
Main east west line, they used a helicopter to remove some of the cars, it was 6 months before it was completely cleaned up. I have some metal and small track pieces from the carnage and repairs.
She received 2 yrs probation and paid prosecution costs was all. Pled guilty to DUI.
Norfolk Southern reported $1,055,899 in equipment damage, and $337,930 in track, signal, way, and structure damage.

I do feel sorry for the truck driver. He is probably a owner/operator and hired the escort service for the trip. Now, his truck and trailer are totaled, insurance will probably drop him, bad hit on his driving record.

This one was on TV the other night. A show called 'Mayday'.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Bernardino_train_disaster
We had a derailment here yrs., ago. One of the box cars had cases of Jack Daniels in it. When they started the cleanup they were giving away cases of JD to anyone that wanted it. I know several people that filled up the trunks of the cars with free cases.

Finally found it. This was a loaded 10 wheel gravel dump truck running downhill and tags the front truck on our #3616 moving at 5mph.

Although, with some work the locomotive ran again. Truck with 1500 miles on it was totaled.
