Daniel & Priscilla Samento:

Authorities believe a retired Cañon City Police Department officer killed his wife, a CCPD dispatcher, before taking his own life in June.

The shooting involved Daniel Samento, 56, and Priscilla Samento, 49.

“We are in a deep state of mourning,” said CCPD Chief Paul Schultz during a June 13 press conference. “These were excellent people, excellent employees, and they served the community here exceptionally well. We are, literally, in a state of shock.”

A press release issued by the CCPD states that officers were dispatched at 11:27 p.m. June 12 to the 700 block of Whipple to check on the welfare of Priscilla Samento after she “had failed to show for her late night shift and was not answering telephone calls,” which was “very out of character” for her, Schultz said at the press conference.

Schultz said two officers initially responded and found the deceased bodies of Daniel and Priscilla Samento. Schultz said the Combined Investigative Response Team, deputies from the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and an investigator from the 11th Judicial District then arrived on scene. Schultz said the “investigation is ongoing, but all indications point toward a murder/suicide.”

Schultz said the incident is “very difficult” on the officers, and the department is making every resource available to them.

“We have a lot of people here in tears and a lot of people who are very, very upset about this, as you can imagine,” he said in June. “We’ll do everything we can to support our people.”

Daniel graduated from Cañon City High School in 1975 and worked for the CCPD as an officer from 1981 until his retirement in 2011. Priscilla, also a CCHS graduate, worked 21 years as a dispatcher for the department.

“(Priscilla) has helped a lot of people in this town, and they’ll never know it,” City Administrator Doug Dotson said June 18. “She was a voice on the telephone and who knows how many people she has helped or maybe even lives saved.”

Mayor Tony Greer on June 18 said he knew the couple through his real estate business.

“They were good people,” he said.

I had dug this up a few years back at the other place by following clues but had forgotten about the guy's general vibe, which was 'smug ass-hat'----just the wrong attitude for a cop.
