Somewhere around that time. The owner of Hawaiian Tropic had his Countach displayed in the mall in Daytona. We were there for the July, NASCAR race. It had already been used in the Cannon Ball Run movie.
Can't remember if it had gold wheels or not. First time I saw one in person.

It's got silver wheels. Unfortunately Ron Rice, Mr.Hawaiian Tropic, wasn't the most attentive owner, and when the Cannonball Run Countach, a 1980 LP400S Series 2 Lowbody, came to auction a few years ago the car was looking a bit haggard with a terrible Oxblood replacement interior, dry rotted tires, spent suspension links and some rusty underpinnings.

The one place the car wasn't bad was the original paint, which remains on the car today. The rest has been restored. The interior is now back to the correct Senape (Tan) leather, and it still retains the custom gauges, car phone and CB radio as in the film.

BTW, that Diablo next to the Countach below is the one used in Dumb And Dumber...

I "heard" somewhere along the line that Hyundai (a loooooooooong time ago when they were an engineering company still) designed the wings for the Countach.

That being said, I KNOW they are beastly, I KNOW they are a PITA to maintain, but I'd still love to have one!!

Those cars pretty much define SEXY for cars, as far as I'm concerned!! Drove one once, was pure dreamy!

Wonder how cold the A/C blows in that joker? I remember Car & Driver once rebuked the Countach for it's less than stellar HVAC blower motor capacity. And yes, I'm definitely feelin' the slim, too.

You definitely wouldn't make any references to a witches' tit in a brass bra when describing it, that is for sure. The good news is the windows only roll down about an inch and a half, so you don't have to worry about any strong cross ventilation either.....

I'm always amazed by the car's diminutive stance, too. I saw my first actual one in BG one year during the annual Corvette Homecoming Weekend.

I imagined it to big a little bit longer and wider than it actually is.

Like the bikini, like the girl, but I imagine a Zima is involved somehow.

Race car builder Dallara designed the Countach wing, as well as the new suspension that debuted on the car in 1979 with the advent of the LP400S.

The A/C works fine, it's the cockpit heat mitigation that was terrible. The transmission extends into the tunnel in the cockpit and acts as a heat sink, bringing the engine heat with it. Add to that the exhaust headers which are right in the small of the back, and a total lack of cockpit insulation and the cockpit becomes a sauna.

C2/C3 Vettes have the exact same problem, just slightly less so. You know how your right leg gets warm in a C2 vette? Just imagine sitting the opposite way with your back against the firewall, and you can see where the Countach's reputation as an oven comes from.

The fix, which appeared on the later cars, is simple, cheap and easy. Just install some modern heat shield while the engine is out for a service.

Stock firewall, looking forward on pass. side...

Reflect-A-Cool insulation installed...

The insulation, plus ceramic coating or wrapping the exhaust, can reduce the cockpit heat to levels where the A/C blows ice cold.

All of the perceived flaws the Countach has are easily remedied, except for the rearward visibility, that will always be terrible.
