An opening for Kerrmudgeon and his pin-up girls (NSFW)
Alberto Vargas (1896-1982) was born in Peru. His father, renowned photographer Max Vargas, taught him how to use an airbrush by the time he was 13. On a trip to Paris with Max in 1911, Alberto came across the magazine, La Vie Parisenne, and its sensuous art made a lasting impression on him. He studied in Zurich and Geneva before leaving Europe because of WWI and landed on Ellis Island in 1916. Vargas' first encounter with America was at Broadway and Fourteenth Street about noon, when he was suddenly surrounder by smartly dressed office workers. Mesmerized by their grace, sophistication, and beauty Vargas decided to devote his life to the American Girl. He first worked designing fashion illustrations for a hat company and Butterick Patterns before becoming a freelance artist. In 1919 he was asked by the Ziegfield Follies to paint 12 watercolours of its leading ladies to display in the lobby of the New Amsterdam Theatre. In 1927 he went to work for Paramount Studios, but maintained his own lengthy list of other clients. He continued to paint various Ziegfield Follies starts for his personal collection. He married in 1930 and moved to Hollwood where he worked for Twentieth Century Fox, then Warner Brothers and later MGM. He became an American citizen in 1939, the same year he was asked by Esquire magazine to feature his work. He agreed to drop the "s" in his last name, and the first Varga Girl appeared in Esquire in 1940. His monthly feature, and the yearly Varga Calender, made him a worldwide sensation. He also painted celebrities such as Jane Russell, Ann Sheridan, Ava Gardner, Marlene Kietrich, and Marily Monroe. By 1946 he and Esquire went their separate ways, marred by a law suit where Vargas was barred from using the "Varga" label which had been copyrighted by Esquire. In the future he used his real last name on his paintings. He continued to work and eventually landed a job at Playboy, where his first assignment was to paint 152 works, adapting new moral standards and more explicit sexuality. Vargas continued his tradition of drawing each model nude, then adding clothing to the final painting for publication. When Vargas' wife passed away in 1974, he lost much of his interest in painting and in life. He died in 1982. |

Your doing fine Councilor, and it's a pain in the ass to put a ton of pics into tinypics and transfer them here from my 'puter.
A lot are nudes, and I'm not sure of the rules on "art nudes". ________ |

And also Luis Royo has done a lot of nice work, but again not in the style of Vargas and Olivia.

I'm not sure of the rules either, but a drawing of a woman's breast is (to me) a far cry from posting a real one. It is art, after all, not porn.

A "nude" painting would be a blank canvas, no?
Carry on...And keep it reasonable. If Bart makes 43 who knows WTF will happen. |

In the 20's and 30's there were lots of fantastic illustrators working for the magazines of the time like "Mystery" and "Pulp". Vargas got famous for his Playboy stuff most of all. Here's a non Vargas, one of my faves.......
You also have to remember that nude photos weren't in magazines until PB and the 50's. In the old day, it was dirty comics that kept the soldiers at war company.... Last edited by Kerrmudgeon; 12-11-2011 at 4:37pm. |

I hope I'm not hijacking a Vargas thread by pointing out other great artist, but thought Julie Bell was also worth mentioning in this thread...

Vargas used to draw famous stars from photos for Playboy as well. This remind you of a certain Swede......
