'Slut Walk' shares important message in Tucson

TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - This Friday women dressed in provocative clothing will take to the streets of Tucson for a good cause.

While the name of the event, "Slut Walk", might raise eyebrows, it's the message behind the walk that organizers hope will get noticed.

The women are trying to get the word out about sexual violence and victim blaming.

The walks started in Toronto, Canada after comments made by a police officer saying that women should avoid dressing like sluts, to avoid being raped.

The protest snow-balled and has hit several American cities and will be in Tucson Friday.

Deborah Davis, a local victim advocate and survivor of sexual assault, says these events are important to help get the word out that a person's appearance or lifestyle choice is not an invitation to sexual violence.

She says victims also need to feel comfortable coming forward.

According to a study done in 2003, one out of five adult women in Arizona have been victims of at least one forcible rape during their lifetime.

Davis says the protest is about education and information as well as recovery.

The Slut Walk starts at 5pm Friday at the Tucson Police Department headquarters downtown.

From there the women will walk along Stone Avenue to the Joel D Valdez main library.

Those people need lives. All spawned from a Canadian police officer giving people at a university some tips on how to avoid being targeted by sexual predators and he suggested not to dress like a slut. Somehow, that caused outrage and now people are protesting all over. Pretty absurd.
