Would I hate it?
1973 XLCH
Right hand shift kick only I love it in some ways, but I had a newer sporty one time and know they are small and considered girlie. This is vintage. Just wonder, if I would hate kicking it and trying to keep maintained enough to make it reliable. |

Well, maybe restore it, clean it up. Have it professionally repainted to original color and decals. Reupholster the seat. Could be one sweet looking ride. Found this image online |

Suicide shifter.
My younger brother had one of those. I rode it once, and never again. Dangerous MF for sure. Cable actuated front drum brake. But you get used to it in a hurry. My earliest HD was a '77 FXS back in '86. By then, HD/AMF had changed the shifter to left side, and I had a kick start plus electric start. |

Man right hand shift would take me a while to get used to. Probably kill myself trying to change Cool vintage bike. This was like a year before AMF took over I think.

No bike with a kick start is a chick bike, IMO. These older ones aren't super reliable, leak oil, and the rear jug runs hot. But, it's all about the antique experience. I drive 60-110 year old cars for the same reason. It helps if you are mechanical and can fix everything that breaks. If you are not savvy that way, you're looking at a lot of frustration. These are a lot easier to start than my 1915 Ford on a hot day.

Points ignition most probably, and a worn out carburetor (and primary chain) if it matches the condition of the rest of the bike. Prone to violent kickback if the points close up or if it is in a bad mood that day. The brakes will suck at best, be nonexistent at worst and it will handle like there's a hinge in the middle of the frame. However, it is low and light and could be cool if it got some love, which it needs pretty desperately.

I wouldn’t be afraid of a 73 Sporty but I’d be afraid of THAT 73 Sporty. She looks rough.
