Yeah, it pained me up get new iPhones a few weeks ago but I felt better about it after Apple announced it was bringing a few hundred billion dollars back into the USA and will be building a new manufacturing facility here after the tax bill was passed. I have to say that the iPhone X is pretty damn nice so far.

I'm not an apple user, but didn't they announce dirt-cheap battery replacements for 2018 because of this mess?

Only for iPhone 6 and up. I had two iPhone 5s but the batteries were still fine. The slowdown thing was a problem during several versions of iOS 11. However the last version I was on the phones were fine. But they were literally at the end of their support life. I have an iPad 3 that is stuck on iOS 9.something because they no longer update that device. Which wasn't much of a problem really except it was slow (it had always been slow really, compared to current devices) and Safari and Chrome were crashing a lot more often.

The battery issues and the slowdown issues are two entirely separate things. I've had roughly five different models of iPhones over the years and never once had a battery life issue. Sure, I've ran out of batter life while traveling before, that's annoying but just because I couldn't charge the damn thing. Not everyone who owns a iPhone 6 or 7 is having battery issues, it just depends on how many full charging cycles you put your battery through.

Most lithium batteries can be fully charged/discharged about 500 times before they are down to 80% capacity from new. A full charge cycle can be five or six partial charge cycles where you are charging from 82% charge back to full. That's how it works for lithium batteries. So for many people that will give your easily four years of battery life before your battery is only 80% of what it was. But if you are having to charge your phone from near dead to fully charged twice a day because you use the hell out of it, then you're going to be seeing not so stellar battery life after about a year, even less.

Admittedly, I just read headlines.
I had a Galaxy S6Edge and that turned into a piece of poo after about a year.
I had to have it on a charger daily, and I am a light user.
My wife is on her own with her iphone.

Skipped Pixel 2 XL. I'm not a phone every year or every other year kind of guy.

Will probably skip Pixel 3 as well.

I kept my original Motorola Razr flip phone bought in 2004 until 2012. Then kept a Droid Razr from 2012 until Christmas 2016 when I got the Pixel XL.
