Subtle brag
3311X5S model Several on the tractor forums think these were some of the best ever made and sought after for resto projects or parts. The 'X' designates 'extra tough' equal to other mfgs. commercial grade mowers at the time. Built in 1986 just down the road from me in GA. all steel! The chassis is great with heavy gauge steel and a 33" deck. Bad news. I think the motor is stuck. I can't turn it by hand. Watching some yt vids they are VERY SIMPLE to tear down and repair if no major damage. I hadn't planned on it. But, should be fun to turn wrenches on and see if I can get it going. For those playing along. Briggs and Stratton 14.5 OHV with electric start. Some forum peeps say if rebuilt these will outlast the big box mowers 4x. |

At the sale they had an entire bagging system for sale. I'm sure it went with this mower and they were trying to maximize $ or too dumb to realize it was probably originally on this one. Looking around online the bagging system or parts bring good $ I should have made them include it! I wonder if those Harbor Freight Chinese motors would work on it? |

Pulled the plug and put a socket on the flywheel. It turns! Wasn't locked up like I had thought. No bad sounds either. No oil deposits or discoloration around the head/block or gasket surfaces. Spark plug looks really nasty and may have been burning oil or running super rich.
Next steps will be to clean carb./fuel system. Figure out some wiring - someone has messed with it before. Not sure, if they were bypassing safety switches or what exactly. I'd like to get it running before ripping the motor apart if possible. I think I'll just try to jump start it with a jumper cable straight to the starter positive lug. |

Those HF Predator motors are just a Honda clone right? I've heard good things about them.

FYI...If you want to find out how old the engine is, look at the "code" number. The first 6 digits will be the DOM (YYMMDD). |

It's pretty rough. Missing some bits. Might do a before/after with some Meguiars products.

The battery is very weak again. Will check volt. with meter after another good charging. But, the starter did engage and spun the engine 1 rev. Maybe there is hope for it. |

Carb. was surprisingly clean. Must have been parked with no fuel. Just a little dirt in main jet and bowl. One has the tiniest little o-ring that you can barely see. Just to mfg. something so tiny and precise is amazing to me. I think B&S shutdown a few yrs., ago? Or was bought out or something. All the decades of rumbling little engines for mowers, go-karts, etc... Next up will be cleaning the flywheel magnet and and coil. |

It's alive!
Turned motor by hand. Cleaned carb. Cleaned spark plug. Cleaned magnet on flywheel. Cleaned coil pack. Cleaned ground cable attaching point. Charged/discharged the very old battery numerous times and added a bit of water. A few coats of Meguiars and it will be ready for Bring A Trailer! It probably needs new belts, seat taped up, battery, and a couple other things to actually be useful and reliable. My goal was to get it running and not blow my $10 budget for it. |
