I worked 3000 hours last year. That's too damn much. The older I get the more value I put on my free time.

Retired union pipefitter/welder here, I started working in the trade in 1969. At that time our week was 35 hours and all overtime was at DOUBLE. Plenty of opportunities to get OT and OT pay being double the money and many hours brought a nice return. We had a bunch of BIG chemical and manufacturing plants in our territory so money and hours were plentiful. Of course most of this work was outside in upper NY state so weather conditions made a lot of that work rather difficult and sometimes dangerous!

Back about 1990 we went to a 40 hour week and all OT at 1 ½ per hour except for Sundays and holidays which remained DOUBLE. Still plenty of money and hours to be made if you wanted to work serious hours. I have many weeks of doing 7-12s (occasionally more hours) and raked in some serious money though being totally honest it phucked up my health and I took early retirement at age 55 (as normally retirement is 62 I had to take a reduction in pension benefits for leaving early)

With that said every hour I worked and some hours counted as double I had a chitload of credits in my pension when I left even with the early out. All those extra hours gave me an extremely good pension with good health benefits + SS have allowed me to enjoy a very nice upper middle class retirement. Wife also has a good retirement package and retired a couple years after I did.

This.

When I was younger I would take any overtime I could get. I'm salary now and have worked overtime in the past but always received comp time. Still, I don't like working overtime.

After working 100hrs/wk for 3 years, I'm kind of enjoying my new 30 hr/wk job. Money isn't everything.

Was salaried. 60hr/wks were expected. Comp time was very rare.
If you hit 80 hrs/wk, you sometimes got 8 hrs of comp.

Sucked it up.
I looked at it like it was a survival game and was able to hang in for almost
35 years to make early retirement.

I started as an outside (union) guy that was paid for OT.
1 1/2 x for anything over 40 up to 50, 2 1/2 x for 50+
Holidays were also 2 1/2 x.

When I took a promotion, I thought I'd be better off in the long run
in management receiving a salary and annual bonus.

Over the years, the occupational/plant crew's OT was limited due to
cost cutting. My hours went up. I worked days, swing, graves and was
oncall 24/7.
Over time as a manager, my benefits were reduced, but the union crews kept the same level of benefits.
I also had to go back to my old outside job during strike duty, working
12 hr days/ 7 days a week.
For one 3 week strike coverage, I received an extra 500 dollars as a "bonus".

I missed many Holidays, Birthdays and fun events with family and friends
that I'll never get back. Especially as some of them are no longer around.
Often, I wished I would have decided against taking the promotion, but
there were some good times as a tech manager too.
I was able to get out before I expected to and that's all that really counts.

Mandatory OT was a condition of employment. Just about a third of my salary was OT, at double time, really damn good money, but I put the hours in. Retired now, kind of miss it, but........... not that much to go back to work.

Salaried now, put in a few extra hours monthly but nothing substantial. No big deal. However, when I was working in TV and was hourly I NEVER wanted OT (still wouldn't want it). My time away from work is more precious than a few extra dollars.

Salaried here and we get paid for OT. If we are supervising a crew we get OT in 4 hour blocks. Working a weekend covering the crew on a shift gets 16 hours of OT. I made quite a bit in OT last year and it looks like this year will be busy as well. I usually average at least 8 hours a week in OT, and on long outage months can get 8-9 units of OT. ( a unit is 8 hrs of OT).

I don't really care for the OT and would much rather have the time off to spend at home with the wife. I worked enough weekends and holidays in the Navy and could do without anymore.
The only upside is the company does pay for the overtime.
