Water is a comming!

I live on the large Sacandaga reservoir in Northern NYS. As I type this the reservoir is now over full, having water go over the dam.l Right now about a foot. From what I heard (No verification) the 3 8' Dow valves are also open and releasing water.

The weather guessers say we are in for a few days of heavy rain.(Just what we need) I just came back from whats left of my beach and re-secured the 3 kayaks and a few other things down there.

I foresee a lot of problems for a lot of people. As for me other than my beach I do not think we are in trouble. Might have to rebuild parts of my long gravel driveway but my house sits much higher and unless a tree hits it all should be OK.

I think you mean over the spillway.

When we were searching acreage we specifically didn’t want any waterfront. We also wanted a high elevation property.

We are “hilly” up here in the panhandle off the coast it still basically flat by most standards and when the rivers and streams and creeks overflow it is catastrophic. I have seen it.

You're welcome. Most people know very little about the infrastructure that surrounds them. Water spilling over a dam is a very serious situation. Over the emergency spillway designed for the flow, not a big deal.

Hey 6-speed: I'm only 200-some miles away from you and although we've been getting some rain lately, we had a very dry winter and near drought conditions according to the weather peeps. This was a couple of months ago.

Yes you are correct. We tend to just say over the dam. I made it a point not to say over topping as this is a earthen dam and that would be very bad.

It is a big deal. It is the spillway but with that happening the reservoir is 3' over full and rising and if weather clowns right a lot more cumming. That means they may have to shut or throttle the big Dow valves as this water in about 15 more miles goes into the Hudson River. That in turn will put more water over the "Dam" and build the water line up considerably.

This reservoir was built because of the Hudson flooding and with the build up of today's Vs the 1920s when the resevor was constructed the potential for serious problems is possible.
