They also had the industrial economy, vs. the more agrarian southern economy. It helps when you've got the factories to make armaments, munitions, ships, cannons, etc.

That should be a lesson to the US.....maybe offshoring all our factories wasn't a great idea after all. Maybe we should be bringing them back. Pharmaceuticals come to mind, as well..

Look what the lack of chips has recently done to the auto industry. It was said a few decades ago the US military depends on Asia to supply chips, electronics, etc...for their equipment. You don't even have to shoot an aircraft out of the sky. Just stop sending the electronics will keep it on the ground.

but...
what they didn't have was the speedy and safer trade routes into America.
Shipping to and from Europe and Africa in the Atlantic was shortened using Fla, and Gulf of Mexico (NOLA and Miss.)...even the Carolinas was shorter and less of a shipping loss risk than going up to Boston and NY.
Any shipping industrialization along the Miss., up to the Ohio River Valley was prime since rail road was so very limited to the south and west.

Stinkin yankees didn't like paying yuge shipping $$$ them fat bastards...

The problem is the current global, dollar based monetary system makes it impossible, outside a massive crisis which appears we are in the process of living through now.

There needs to be a neutral global reserve asset similar to gold or better yet, gold, instead of the current politically controlled dollar. The ability to create “money” from thin air is the ultimate power and power corrupts.
