I always thought the farmer's thing was bullshit. During the times of the year when they need to maximize their time in the field, they will get out there by sunrise, and come in when it is too dark to see. Why would they give a shit what the clocks say?

The school kid thing at least makes some sense. it is harder to see kids darting around, like kids do, when it is dark out. I can see some benefit to not having the kids leaving for school until the sun is up. But don't schools start at around 8 am? Unless you are in Alaska, it's pretty light at 7:30 am, even around the winter solstice.

It’s not when school starts, but when kids have to wait for the bus. Ours were out there at 6:45 for 7:45 class start...

I lived in California back in the '70 when they tried to extend Daylight Savings Time. If I recall correctly, some high school girl got raped walking to school in the dark, so the policy was changed.

I don’t change my clocks. They change automatically.

I enjoy having daylight as late as 2100 around here. When I was a working stiff, it gave me more daylight in the evening after work to get stuff done.

It's interesting that you mention Alaska. Those folks go through 20 plus hours of dark during the winter and still manage to survive. Makes DST sound like a joke

I think the idea would be to leave it at the DST setting all year and just forget about moving it back to standard time. The argument would then become how long dark lasts in the morning.

Cars I understand because you look at the clock a lot, but thermostats? You might change the program for the different sun cycle but time is irrelevant.

If our only concern is the kids waiting for a bus in the dark, isn't it a better idea to change the time our schools start, and not pester EVERYONE in society twice a year?

Good luck with that Teachers are refusing to come back at all, let alone do anything that would inconvenience them

I agree; but leave it like that year round.

I prefer when it gets dark later in the evenings but can't say it has bothered my schedule to the point of complaining.

Worst part for me is waking up and wondering if it's AM or PM because it's dark out. Have to verify it on the computer and guess wrong about half the time

If we don't change the clocks twice a year how will we know when to change the batteries in our smoke detectors, or filters in our furnaces?
